As one of the largest market teams in the NBA, the Los Angeles Lakers are a franchise that has almost overgrown the sport itself. Widely renowned as a successful and prestigious organization, everybody knows about the Purple and Gold, and their competitors are always playing with an extra edge against them.

In a chat with the media ahead of Sunday’s matchup with L.A., Rockets star Kevin Porter Jr. was very honest about playing against the Lakers and why his team plays a little extra harder when they come to town.

“We love playing the Lakers,” Porter said, via Houston Chronicle. “It’s the Lakers, at the end of the day. Bron, A.D., big names come in and that’s usually when we raise our intensity. And it’s our home. They’re coming in here. We have to protect our home.”

Of course, it’s not just the Lakeshow that gets Porter and his team going, but the Lakers seem to be a special case across the league, and even the team recognizes they always get the best shot from the competition.

Sadly, despite the amazing track record of success, and an allure that attracts every player to the squad, there are some serious questions about the future of the Lakers and how they can compete moving forward.

A Big Offseason Ahead For The Lakers

Being a Laker comes with the expectation of winning titles, and the front office has been doing everything they can to ensure they are set up to compete for years to come.

This summer, in particular, several big decisions loom that could impact how this team looks next season and beyond.

“If you really study the contracts of these five players, we very intentionally planned these moves to provide optionality in July,” Pelinka said on his grand plan. “Some of these players have team options or team-controlled years on their contract, which, again, gives us the ability to see how these last games and how potential postseason games go. And then we can go into this offseason with a higher collection of data points, and sort of a real-time analysis of how the pieces fit and make decisions for the future.”

We will see soon enough if the Lakers can get to a respectable place in the West, but nobody can doubt the pressure they face day in and day out.

Besides the hungry fanbase that is never satisfied, the Lakers will always be the team that gets circled on the calendar.
