Klay Thompson has joined the Dallas Mavericks on a three-year, $50 million contract after being sign-and-traded in a three-team deal including the Golden State Warriors and Charlotte Hornets, as reported by Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

Full trade details

Golden State Warriors Receive: 2031 Second-Round Pick (DAL), 2025 Second-Round Pick (DEN/PHI)

Charlotte Hornets Receive: Josh Green

Dallas Mavericks Receive: Klay Thompson

This move marks the end of Thompson’s illustrious 13-year tenure with the Golden State Warriors, also sending Josh Green away from the Mavericks after being drafted by the franchise in 2020.

Despite receiving offers for more money and longer terms, Thompson chose the Mavericks, partly due to the favorable state tax conditions in Texas and the opportunity to compete for a fifth championship. His agent, Greg Lawrence of Wasserman Basketball, facilitated serious discussions with the Mavericks and the Lakers, ultimately guiding Thompson to Dallas.

Joining Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, Thompson forms a formidable new Big 3 in Dallas. The Mavericks are fresh off a Finals appearance, where they were overpowered by the Boston Celtics in five games. The addition of Thompson addresses their need for more offensive firepower, enhancing their chances for another deep playoff run.

Thompson’s departure from the Warriors closes a significant chapter in NBA history. Alongside Stephen Curry, he formed the iconic “Splash Brothers” duo, renowned for their unparalleled shooting prowess. Together with Draymond Green, they constituted the core of the Warriors’ dynasty, which captured four NBA titles in six Finals appearances.

Thompson’s individual accolades include five NBA All-Star selections, two All-NBA Third Team honors, and an NBA All-Defensive Second Team selection. His legacy in Golden State is defined by his clutch performances, defensive tenacity, and record-breaking shooting feats. Notably, Thompson holds the record for most three-pointers made in a single game (14) and most points scored in a single quarter (37).

In Dallas, Thompson brings veteran leadership, championship experience, and elite shooting to a Mavericks team hungry for another title. His ability to stretch the floor and play off the ball will complement Doncic and Irving’s playmaking, creating one of the most potent offensive units in the league.

As the Mavericks gear up for the upcoming season, Thompson’s arrival signals their commitment to contending for championships and building on their recent success. The move not only bolsters their roster but also sends a message to the rest of the NBA that Dallas is a force to be reckoned with.
