After making progress in the 2021-22 campaign, it seems luck has run out for the New York Knicks. As the players struggle to get a grip, the losses keep piling up and they were running out of time to make something of the season.
As analysts struggle to diagnose the Knickerbockers, former Sixers coach Larry Brown offered his own take on the team and why they appear to be right back where they were two years ago.
“Last year was such a dream. They lost some people, but you can’t explain how important Derrick Rose was to that team. He was such a big part. They lose their best defensive guard [Reggie Bullock] and Thibs is such a stickler for having a defensive presence,” Brown said, per Marc Berman of the New York Post.
Still, unlike most, Brown has faith that the Knicks are poised for a rise in the NBA. They have talent and a lot of bright young prospects.
“I like the kid from West Virginia [Miles McBride]. I love their young kids. RJ Barrett is getting better and better. When [Julius] Randle plays, he’s sensational. They got a shot-blocker and I hope they keep [Mitchell] Robinson. That kid affects the game. He doesn’t command the ball, guards and protects the rim. He’s so athletic. They got a lot of great pieces. I still believe players wants to play in New York.’’
The Knicks are just 28-39 this season and 4.5 games back from the final play-in spot. Even if they manage to get there, it’s unlikely they get very far with their current regime.
But, going forward, there is hope that better days are ahead. For one of the NBA’s most illustrious franchises, one has to think it’s only a matter of time before their luck finally turns.
