  • NBA insider Bobby Marks recently revealed a list of players that could become eligible for the supermax contract
  • Luka Doncic and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander are the most prominent players on the list
  • Shai Gilgeous-Alexander could become the first $400 million player

There is no doubt that player salaries have steadily been rising over recent years, with a lot of stars signing insane extensions. The supermax extension has allowed stars to make more money than ever.

Recently, NBA insider Bobby Marks of ESPN revealed the list of players who are candidates to get a supermax contract. Luka Doncic and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander are the two prominent names on the list.

A player needs to have made an All-NBA team or gotten the MVP or DPOY award in the last three seasons to qualify, while also having 7 or more years of service. The deal can also only be signed if a player has one or two years left on their contract. It will be interesting to see whether players like Bam Adebayo or Jamal Murray end up qualifying in the future, as they have never made an All-NBA team, and it is unclear if they’ll make it this season. Though players like Luka Doncic and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander are almost assured of getting a supermax, players like Adebayo or Murray getting that sort of contract is far from certain.

Ultimately, all of the stars will get life-changing money with their next extension. However, the difference between the supermax and the regular max contract is substantial, and we’ll see which players end up getting it in the future.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Could Become The First-Ever Player To Get A $400 Million Contract

For Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, it seems as though his contract could be even higher than is expected by Bobby Marks. In fact, previously, CBS Sports predicted that Shai Gilgeous-Alexander will be the first player to sign a $400 million contract.

“So if he wants to tack five years onto his deal, he will have to wait until the summer of 2026. If he does so and remains at the All-NBA level he reached last season, he has a real chance to become the NBA’s first $400 million player.”

It remains to be seen if Shai Gilgeous-Alexander ends up making that sort of money in the future. $400 million over five years is $80 million annually, and that is certainly a staggering amount of money.

Luka Doncic Knows That Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Is One Of The Best Players In The League

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Luka Doncic faced off against one another in the 2023 FIBA World Cup, with Gilgeous-Alexander leading Canada to a win against Slovenia. There is clearly respect between the two, and Doncic notably called Gilgeous-Alexander one of the best players in the world.

Last season, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 31.4 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game, while shooting 51.0% from the field. He made the All-NBA First Team last season, and if he can replicate his performance from this season over the course of a few years, Gilgeous-Alexander will rightly be deemed as a superstar within the league. Hopefully, we see him lead the Oklahoma City Thunder to a playoff appearance next season, and unfortunately, they were eliminated in the play-in tournament by the Minnesota Timberwolves this season.
