Luka Doncic may not be in the playoffs after a doomed season with the Dallas Mavericks, but he’s still regarded as one of the best players in the NBA.

Mavericks guard Theo Pinson was asked about Doncic scoring 53 points earlier in the season against the Detroit Pistons after an assistant coach went out of his way to talk trash.

“I don’t know who that assistant was, he was wilding out. I have never seen an assistant talk so crazy to a player, never. Never seen someone that, Luka wasn’t even playing the Pistons no more, he was playing him. He wanted all the smoke. He was talking crazy as hell, do I know what exactly he said? No, I forgot. But he was taking crazy.”

Luka Doncic had a phenomenal individual season with Dallas this year, averaging 32.4 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 8.0 assists and narrowly losing out to Joel Embiid in the scoring title race. He is on a very awkwardly built team that needs a major course correction this offseason.

Can The Mavericks Appease Luka Doncic In One Summer?

Doncic has given no indication to anyone that he wants to leave Dallas or if he’s even considered it. He protects his teammates from the media quite often and has repeatedly asked this season’s failures to be put on him as well. But the Mavericks have some interesting moves that can be made in the summer.

They have the 10th overall draft pick in an incredibly deep 2023 NBA Draft, which could net them a solid player that could provide value immediately. Success through that would be slower than trading the pick away along with contracts like Davis Bertans and Tim Hardaway Jr., but it seems the Mavs are interested in making a win-now trade for an established star.

The team is heavily linked to Deandre Ayton and a possible package including their pick, THJ, and Josh Green could possibly be headed to Phoenix. The Mavs would be foolish to trade more depth away for one player when they’re hamstrung by salary rules and could lose Kyrie Irving in free agency. But again, this organization isn’t renowned for being able to maneuver the trade market and emerge as a winner, something indicated by its recent history.
