Charles Barkley has never been one to follow the crowd, and that philosophy even extended to the biggest celebrity weddings of the year. The NBA Hall of Famer recently revealed that he did receive an invitation to the wedding of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, but he turned it down for a simple reason.

Speaking on Unfiltered with Ricky Bo and Bill Colarulo, Barkley said that his decision had nothing to do with the bride or groom.

“I don’t go to weddings. That’s one of my things. I don’t go to weddings or funerals. But I did get an invite. And I politely declined because I thought it was going to be a complete circus. I love Travis and Jason. And I’ve only met Taylor one time. But yeah, I did get an invitation. I just said, ‘You know what? That’s too much for me.’ I’d rather hang out, play golf, and not have to dress up and do all that other stuff. But I really appreciated the invitation. It was pretty special.”

Considering the global spotlight surrounding Swift and Kelce’s relationship, Barkley’s reason was pretty understandable. Their wedding became one of the most important celebrity events of the year, and it attracted an enormous guest list filled with athletes, actors, musicians, and entertainers.

And instead of spending the day in a formal setting surrounded by hundreds of people, Chuck simply wanted to play golf.

That summed up Charles Barkley’s personality.

Throughout his NBA career and even during his broadcasting days, Barkley has been quite honest. Whether you agree with him or not, he never hides his opinions, and his explanation for skipping the wedding was exactly the same.

And Chuck made it clear there were no hard feelings. He has been close with Travis and his brother Jason Kelce and said that he met Taylor Swift once. So he did have a valid reason to attend this wedding. But given the scale of the event, it’s easy to understand why Barkley wanted to avoid it.

Swift is arguably the biggest music star on the planet, while Kelce has become one of the most popular faces in the NFL. Their relationship has been in the spotlight for two years, and their wedding was one of the biggest stories of the year.

But Barkley simply preferred to have a quiet day of golf.

He simply thanked the couple for thinking of him, wished them well, and chose a round of golf over one of the most star-studded weddings of the year. For anyone who has followed Barkley throughout his career, that decision probably isn’t surprising at all.
