Dennis Schroder’s decision to turn down an $84 million offer from the Los Angeles Lakers last year is still a topic of discussion around the NBA. The German playmaker bet on himself and tried to prove he was worth more than that and failed, settling with a $6 million contract with the Boston Celtics in the offseason.
Even though he has stated that the Lakers never offered him that contract, people can’t help but troll the player for missing such a big opportunity. His stint with the Purple and Gold wasn’t as good as expected and the team decided to look for new players, breaking up the core they had last season.
Schroder didn’t have more remedy than sign a cheaper contract with the C’s, earning a lot of criticism and jokes around the league. This won’t stop anytime soon, as Shaquille O’Neal and Charles Barkley went off on the playmaker recently, making jokes about his missed opportunities, telling him to fire his agent.
“There’s an old saying in the hood. It’s not about the money, it’s about the damn money,” O’Neal said on NBA on TNT. “Dennis Schroder, whoever your agent is, you gotta fire him.”
Barkley joined the party and agreed with Shaq, saying the same about the player’s agent.
“I don’t care if it’s his mom, his dad, his brother, he’s gotta fire his agent. If you turn down $84 million against $6 [million], uh…” Chuck said while the rest of the crew laughed.
Dennis can’t catch a break over this situation. People have made sure to remind him of all the money he dropped when he didn’t accept the reported office from the Lakers. Now they’re paying $44 million to Russell Westbrook, who hasn’t lived up to the expectations, either, while Schroder is getting $6 million this campaign.
He really fumbled the bag, but Dennis isn’t losing sleep over that. Still, the jokes that came out of that situation are hilarious and it’ll take a long time before the NBA world completely forgets about it.
