LeBron James has a big decision to make this summer, and we know his biggest priorities are winning and finding “basketball happiness” for his 24th season. So far, three main teams have emerged as contenders for James (Warriors, Cavaliers, Heat), but he’ll consider any franchise that’s in the championship picture next season.

The Philadelphia 76ers weren’t previously in the conversation, but all that has changed now in the light of Jaylen Brown’s arrival. Between him, Joel Embiid, and Tyrese Maxey, the 76ers are poised to be a major title threat, and it also puts them in the race for James. According to The Athletic’s Tony Jones, the Sixers have already been working to bring the four-time champion to the City of Brotherly Love.

“The Philadelphia 76ers have expressed interest in acquiring free agent forward LeBron James, a league source who spoke on condition of anonymity to describe ongoing deliberations told The Athletic. On the heels of Wednesday night’s blockbuster trade for Jaylen Brown — which sent Paul George and multiple draft picks to the Boston Celtics — the Sixers have thrown their hat into the proverbial ring for the star forward, who became an unrestricted free agent after eight seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers.”

Even at 41, LeBron is the hottest free agent on the market this summer. Coming off the 2025-26 season, where he averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, 7.2 assists, 1.2 steals, and 0.6 blocks per game on 51.5% shooting and 31.7% shooting from three, there’s no doubt that he can still deliver at a high level, and he’s already confirmed to be playing for the 2025-26 campaign. The only uncertainty is where he’ll end up.

While it’s not the perfect fit, the 76ers offer LeBron everything he’s looking for. Between Tyrese Maxey and V.J. Edgecombe, the 76ers will have plenty of scoring in the backcourt. There’s also Joel Embiid at center, who is an MVP candidate when healthy. Last season, with Paul George on the wing, they went 45-37 (seventh in the East) and reached the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

With Jaylen Brown on the team, the 76ers are instantly a contender, and they could win 60+ games if Embiid stays healthy. For LeBron, there are not many better landing spots. With a stacked roster, he’d have a chance to compete in a big-market city alongside both young stars and experienced NBA veterans. They could give him a fresh start while also promising a winning environment. It’s a move that would surely break the NBA, as well as shock every fan and expert who was certain he’d end up in Golden State.

At this point, it’s up to LeBron to decide where he goes from here, but we know he’s in no rush to make a decision. With money a non-factor here, he’s going to make his pick purely on which team can put him in the best situation. In the end, it’s going to be hard to beat the Cavaliers and Warriors, but if any team has a chance, it’s the 76ers. Jaylen Brown’s arrival has opened things up for them, and team President Mike Gansey isn’t letting the opportunity go to waste.
