Deandre Ayton might not be a superstar as of right now, but he is still one of the best big men in the league. He is a solid post scorer and rebounder as of right now, and currently, Deandre Ayton is putting up 17.8 PPG, 10.1 RPG, and 2.1 APG for the Phoenix Suns.
There has been a lot of speculation about Deandre Ayton potentially leaving the Phoenix Suns at some point in the future. He notably signed a max contract with the Indiana Pacers during the summer, but the Phoenix Suns ended up matching his deal and retaining him because of his status as a restricted free agent at the time.
On a recent episode of The Lowe Post podcast, Dallas Mavericks insider Tim MacMahon revealed that Deandre Ayton is a player that the Mavericks are interested in, though he did note that they would likely acquire him “down the road” rather than before the trade deadline. (1:00:19)
He’s a name that I’ve heard around the Mavericks. And again, I think that would have to be a later-than-right-now type of situation. … I think that’s more than likely a down-the-road conversation.
It would be interesting to see Deandre Ayton on the Dallas Mavericks, but it is unclear how advanced the interest from the team is. He would definitely be a great fit with Luka Doncic and would help the team offensively. An Ayton trade is clearly unlikely to happen ahead of the trade deadline, but this is clearly a situation to keep an eye on in the future.
The Dallas Mavericks Have Been Linked To D’Angelo Russell
Even if they are unlikely to trade for Deandre Ayton ahead of the trade deadline, there is a chance that the Dallas Mavericks could make a different move. A previous report suggested that they were one of the teams that were interested in D’Angelo Russell.
“I don’t think the Wolves reinvest in Russell,” a Western Conference executive said. “The combination of players they have just isn’t clicking.”
It’s unclear where he might land, though teams mentioned as possibilities by various NBA sources included the Heat, Suns, Mavericks and Clippers.
D’Angelo Russell is a great offensive point guard, and he would take some of the load on that end of the floor away from Luka Doncic. He also has an elite off-ball game, which makes him a good fit with a ball-dominant player like Doncic.
Hopefully, we see the Dallas Mavericks make some sort of move. It is clear that Luka Doncic needs some help to get far in the playoffs, and we’ll see what the front office ends up doing.
