LeBron James is one of the last major dominoes left to fall this summer, and the entire NBA is anticipating his next move. Even at 41 years old, King James remains a hot commodity, and at least half the league has expressed interest in signing a team-friendly deal this offseason.
LeBron’s agent, Rich Paul, has confirmed that LeBron is pursuing “basketball happiness,” but only James knows how to measure it. What we do know is that not every team has an equal chance for the four-time champion. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, three teams are considered frontrunners (Warriors, Heat, Cavaliers), with every other team in the periphery.
“10 teams have a standing offer for LeBron James, but you have to whittle that down a little. When I talk to people around the league, the teams that continue to come up are Cleveland, Miami, and Philadelphia after they got Jaylen Brow,” reported Shams Charania on ‘Straight Shooter.’ “I look at it when I talk to teams now, as a hierarchy of Cleveland, Miami, Philadelphia, and then there’s some teams on the periphery.”
The Cavaliers and Heat have been tied to the King from the very beginning (for obvious reasons), but the Warriors’ position has changed. They were considered a favorite at the start, but have seemingly fallen behind due to a mix of factors likely relating to age, personal history, and overall basketball fit. While they are not out of the race, only a trade for Anthony Davis would give them an edge over the top three teams.
By all accounts, the Philadelphia 76ers have taken their spot. They were not in consideration at the start, but the trade for Jaylen Brown changed everything. As a team now positioned to compete for a title this season, the 76ers have earned LeBron’s consideration, and it could make them an even more formidable opponent in the East.
“Philadelphia was not in the picture, and that’s why this is somewhat of a true free agency for LeBron James,” Shams added. “He didn’t go into it with a calculation or plan in place. You leave the Lakers, and you don’t necessarily know what your value is. There’s not a guaranteed max that you’re walking into, so you have to be open-minded. So when the 76ers got Jaylen Brown, I did some research, and I found out he’s taking their pitch really seriously.”
In the end, with so many teams ready to sign LeBron, it’s anyone’s guess when or what he’ll decide to do. He’s in no rush to make a decision, and he’ll continue to bide his time as teams make their last-ditch efforts to convince him to join. With that being said, the feeling around the league is that LeBron is likely headed back home, and it makes the most sense given his basketball fit and history with the Cavaliers.
But until he actually makes up his mind, almost anything is on the table for LeBron, as he pursues the glorious ending he deserves. He couldn’t find it with the Lakers, but now he has a chance to dictate his own terms during this final stretch of his career.
