The NBA never sleeps. The Los Angeles Lakers have acquired Luka Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks by sending Anthony Davis to the Texas-based franchise. A trade that many believed wasn’t real when Shams Charania initially broke the news has now been confirmed by various sources and will go down as arguably one of the most shick trades in NBA history.

The full package includes Doncic, Maxi Kleber, and Markieff Morris going to the Lakers for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round pick from the Lakers. The Utah Jazz are the third team involved and get second-round picks for absorbing Jalen Hood-Schifino’s contract.

Full details of the mega trade between the Lakers and Mavericks:

Lakers: Luka Doncic, Maxi Kleber, Markieff Morris

Mavericks: Anthony Davis, Max Christie, 2029 LAL 1st

Jazz: Jalen Hood-Schifino, 2025 Clippers 2nd, 2025 Mavericks 2nd

The Mavericks reportedly made Doncic available in trade to the Lakers, according to Shams.

“The Mavericks approached the Lakers recently and offered Luka Doncic, sources tell ESPN. Lakers brass met and believed the 25-year-old Doncic has the ability to be the face of their franchise for the next decade while giving Anthony Davis a win-now move in Dallas.”

Mavericks GM Nico Harrison has already addressed why the Mavericks made this shocking move, prioritizing the defense Davis brings to the franchise.

“I believe that defense wins championships,” Mavs GM Nico Harrison told ESPN regarding his motivation to trade Luka Doncic for Anthony Davis. “I believe that getting an All-Defensive center and an All-NBA player with a defensive mindset gives us a better chance. We’re built to win now and in the future.”

This is a bonkers deal, as the Lakers have landed the next face of the franchise and a consistent MVP-caliber superstar while the Mavericks have to deal with an aging Anthony Davis, although it does improve their defense tremendously.

As a Mavericks fan, I feel like someone has shot me in the chest. We imagined Luka to be the true successor to Dirk Nowitzki, winning MVPs and Finals MVPs for the franchise. But the front office has decided to move on from him without the star requesting a trade or indicating he wouldn’t stay with the franchise long-term.

Doncic is averaging 28.1 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 7.8 assists this season. Davis is averaging 25.7 points, 11.9 rebounds, and 3.4 assists.
