The Miami Heat are currently trying to find the right deal so they can put an end to the Jimmy Butler saga. But until now, it hasn’t been clear what exactly they are looking for. According to Brian Windhorst and Tim Bontemps of ESPN, the Heat are interested in taking back players who can make an immediate impact, young stars, valuable draft picks, and players whose contracts expire in 2026, ahead of a stacked free agent class.

“Sources on both sides of the Butler saga say there’s motivation to get a deal done between now and the deadline.”

“The Heat have had conversations with other teams, but so far, the offers coming in haven’t included what Miami is looking for: players who can help “now, young talent, draft capital, and salary that expires by the summer of 2026.

“While we haven’t seen free agency play a big factor in the league in recent years, that summer could see stars such as Kevin Durant, Luka Doncic, Trae Young, De’Aaron Fox, and Jaren Jackson Jr. become unrestricted free agents.”

“With the salary cap starting to rise in the wake of the league’s new television deal, there’s at least the possibility of next summer boasting multiple big-name players changing teams. The Heat are trying to position themselves to land one.”

The report states that the Heat haven’t gotten an offer that meets the requirements they have set for a trade. For the time being, the Heat continues to keep Butler away from the team, suspending him for two games on top of the original seven-game suspension he initially received, this one citing disciplinary reasons.

The hope between both sides will be that the Heat decide to finally call an end to this long-winding saga and trade Jimmy Butler soon. One team is interested in Butler, even if it is for a short-term lease.

Grizzlies Want Butler For Playoff Run

It was reported yesterday that Jimmy Butler wanted to go anywhere but the Memphis Grizzlies as part of his trade, as he wants to end his career wherever he ends up next. But the Grizzlies might be okay with that, as ESPN’s report states they could trade for Butler knowing full well he will leave in free agency, but use him for the 2025 NBA playoffs, while also granting themselves a lot of cap space in the summer.

“The Grizzlies are lurking in Butler trade talks, sources said, and have been in contact with the Heat during the process. Rival league executives believe Memphis is trying to combine a talent influx with offloading some future salary so it can facilitate a contract extension for Jaren Jackson Jr. as early as this summer.”

“Butler, meanwhile, has made it known that he could opt out of his contract this summer and seek free agency. Sources have theorized that if the Grizzlies can acquire him for a playoff run and also free cap space this summer, that’s where their interests might lie.”

This deal might actually suit all parties. Butler will get to play competitive playoff basketball with a strong team in the West, thus getting to raise his stock. The Grizzlies will receive an expiring contract who is a historic playoff riser, who could give them a massive boost in the postseason. And the Heat will receive their desired combination of young players, picks, and expiring contracts.

The Grizzlies are an unlikely landing spot for Butler, but not an impossible one. This is a developing situation, and we recommend you stay tuned to Fadeaway World for all the latest updates on the trade window, along with the best-in-class NBA analysis.
