The Miami Heat’s pursuit of three veteran free agents might ultimately come down to the decision of one player: LeBron James.

According to NBA Insider Jake Fischer, the Heat’s plans to round out its roster are on hold as the franchise waits for LeBron’s long-awaited free agency decision. Speaking on the Heat’s offseason, Fischer explained that three veterans could be monitoring the situation before making their own decision.

“All these veterans who could go to Miami and join Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo, they I think will all be on hold with LeBron’s situation.”

The list includes DeMar DeRozan, Bradley Beal and Khris Middleton, three former All-Stars who are past their prime, but still could make big impacts on minimum contracts.

DeRozan is the biggest name of the group. The six-time All-Star was waived by the Sacramento Kings a day ago, after averaging 18.4 points, 2.9 rebounds and 4.1 assists while shooting 49.7% from the field last season. Even at 36, he is one of the most reliable mid-range scorers and could provide secondary offense for a Heat team that already features Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo.

Beal presents another intriguing option, but injuries are definitely a major concern. Hoping to revive his career, Beal joined the Los Angeles Clippers last season on a veteran’s deal, but his season lasted just 8 games as he suffered a hip injury and needed surgery. He averaged 8.2 points and 1.7 assists while shooting 37.5% from the field and 36.8% from three-point range. Beal declined his player option and entered free agency, hoping to add a title to his name.

Middleton is also a real possibility, especially with his history with Giannis. The former All-Star averaged 10.2 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.8 assists while shooting 42.0% from the floor and 36.0% from beyond the arc, playing for the Washington Wizards and the Dallas Mavericks. He is no longer the player he was during the Bucks’ title run in 2020, but his playoff experiences, versatility, and chemistry with Giannis could prove to be invaluable.

The Heat already made one of the biggest blockbuster moves of the season, as they landed Giannis. But that came at a price, as they had to sacrifice their depth and future draft picks. So adding veterans who are willing to accept smaller roles is vital for the Heat’s title prospects.

That is where LeBron James comes into the equation. If LeBron chooses the Heat, they become one of the clear championship favorites and can make an even more attractive destination for veteran ring chasers.

The Heat are definitely not frontrunners, but they are not out of the conversation either. Until LeBron makes his choice, the Heat seem content to wait before making their next moves.
