Spurs star Victor Wembanyama was just three wins away from the NBA championship this year, marking the first of what will likely be many long playoff runs. At 22 years old, Victor still has a lot to prove, but he’s ready to get to work and build off last season’s momentum.
The first order of business is to sign a new extension and show his long-term commitment. While no official agreement has been revealed, Victor’s latest post on X hints that he just made a move to secure his future in San Antonio.
Spurs family, I’m here to stay.
Whatever it takes🖤

The French big man is eligible for a five-year, $253 million extension this summer, and he clearly intends to sign. After leading the Spurs to the Finals last season, with averages of 25.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.0 steals, and 3.1 blocks per game on 51.2% shooting and 34.9% shooting from three, he showed he’s worth every penny, but Victor may not even ask for the maximum. Instead, according to Jake Fischer, he may be open to taking a small pay cut on his next deal to help the Spurs maintain roster flexibility.
“There has been word this morning in Las Vegas that Victor Wembanyama is considering signing less than his maximum rookie scale extension to provide San Antonio greater financial flexibility,” reported NBA insider Jake Fischer.
It’s rare for someone as young as Victor, without years of career earnings to rely on, to take anything less than the max. Usually, players opt to secure the bag first before worrying about helping their team maintain flexibility. For Victor, it would be a remarkable display of maturity and sacrifice, and irrefutable evidence of his desire to win.
At the same time, it would also grant the Spurs peace of mind, knowing that Victor is committed for years to come. Without the fear that he might leave them hanging, they could focus on building a proper supporting cast that caters to all of his strengths. It would also alleviate the financial strain on the ownership group and avoid distractions that could break the team apart.
As for what the Spurs intend to do with the extra space, that much remains to be seen. Adding another high-impact player is easier said than done, but the Spurs don’t need to change much to put themselves in title contention. Besides Victor, they have a whole cast of star-studded athletes, including Dylan Harper, De’Aaron Fox, Keldon Johnson, and Stephon Castle. That’s not to mention role players like Julian Champagnie, Devin Vassell, and newcomer Tobias Harris, who all add another layer of depth to the rotation.
Ultimately, there can be no doubt that the Spurs are all-in on the title pursuit, and Victor himself is setting the pace. By extending now and taking a pay cut to boot, he has secured a brighter future for San Antonio that could see them dominate the West for years to come. Until then, he’s going to keep working and leading to tip the scales as much as he can.
