For the second time in a week, the Dallas Wings and the Indiana Fever faced off on Thursday night. This game had all the makings of another fiercely contested fight after Dallas lost to Indiana 98-87 in their previous encounter. This was evident late in the second quarter when Paige Bueckers and Caitlin Clark got into a heated exchange, adding another memorable moment to their growing on-court rivalry.
Bueckers played defense when Clark had the ball with less than 10 seconds left in the second quarter during the August 20, 2026, game. Then, in an attempt to halt the possession before halftime, Bueckers wrapped up Clark’s left arm. At the time, Dallas was particularly guilty of committing a foul.
As Bueckers persisted in attempting to finish the foul, Clark looked irritated by the contact. Before the two teams left for the locker room, Clark responded by sending the ball down the court, which flew close to Bueckers’ head.
The two star guards had a brief exchange as a result of the incident. However, what was said was not properly captured by television microphones.
The tension seemed to persist throughout the second half even after Bueckers was penalized for a personal foul on the play.
As Bueckers and Clark clashed, the commentary quickly focused on their heated exchange.
The broadcaster said, “Some intensity (is) brewing here as Clark taking (sic) exception to the bump. You see Bueckers grabbing the arm of Clark, and Clark flailing the arm,” per a video shared on X (formerly Twitter).
Cameras also captured an animated Clark trying to sway Bueckers away upon contact. When the Fever guard tried to make her feelings known to the officials, cameras captured Bueckers seemingly mouthing the words, “calm down.”
“Calm Down.”

Even though Amazon Prime Video‘s camera angle made it hard to see if Bueckers was speaking to Clark, fans on the internet seem confident as to who those words were directed towards.
Despite the dispute between the two elite stars, Indiana didn’t slow down. Clark assisted Kelsey Mitchell, who made a six-foot basket to tie the match and bring the Fever within striking distance as the halftime buzzer rang.
Although Bueckers’ and Clark’s relationship has mostly been based on respect for one another, the competitive hunger was clear as the playoffs drew near and both teams fought for crucial postseason spots. Thus, that level of intensity continued until the third quarter.
Bueckers fouled Clark again with 7:55 left in the third, but this time the situation became more serious. Bueckers challenged the call with the referees, and the personal foul was escalated to a technical.
The Wings guard may now expect to receive a $500 fine from the WNBA. Bueckers’ technical against Indiana on Thursday was just her second of the year. The first was against the Atlanta Dream in the third quarter in May 2026. The technical foul was revoked, though.
Dallas and Indiana fought it out throughout the game. However, the altercations are unlikely to indicate anything other than intense competition between the two star guards.
With just seven games remaining in the regular season for both Dallas and Indiana, neither team gave the other a commanding edge. Every possession became more crucial as a result, especially since the Wings were fighting to make the postseason and the Fever were defending their postseason spot.
With Azzi Fudd out of the picture, Dallas still managed to register a thumping 91-85 win, ending Clark and Indiana’s five-game winning run.
Unfortunately, neither Bueckers nor Clark were available for the postgame media talk for their respective teams, so there’s not much information regarding what really went down between the two on the court.
