We are under two weeks away from the start of the 2024-25 NBA season and Tracy McGrady has locked in his prediction for who’ll win MVP. McGrady took to Instagram on Sunday night to reveal Luka Doncic is his pick for the award.

“I’m gonna go based off the season he had last year, leading his team to the Finals, I think coming back this year he’s gonna be even hungrier,” McGrady said. “I look at a guy like Luka Doncic that I feel will be this year’s MVP. A guy that leads his team in a lot of categories.

“Point guard for his team, facilitator for his team, scorer for his team,” McGrady continued. “He’s a guy that I think every year coming into the NBA season you can always consider him as an MVP candidate but I think coming into this season, it’ll be Luka Doncic’s MVP to lose.

“I think Dallas is gonna be a very good team, adding Klay Thompson,” McGrady stated. “So, I look for Dallas to do some big, big things. Possibly seeing them back in the Finals and Luka being the MVP of this year.”

Doncic has been one of the top contenders for the award heading into the last few seasons as well but has failed to win it thus far, finishing third in voting last time around. There are some good reasons to believe, though, that he’ll finally get it done in 2024-25.

For starters, you know Doncic is going to put up big numbers. The five-time All-Star averaged 33.9 points, 9.2 rebounds, 9.8 assists, 1.4 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game in 2023-24 for the Dallas Mavericks and I’d expect more of the same from him moving forward.

The Mavericks, meanwhile, are expected to improve on their 50-32 record from last season, which saw them get the fifth seed in the West. If they end up being one of the top two this time around, Doncic would find himself in a great position to win MVP.

As for who’d be the biggest threat to snatch the award from him, I reckon it’ll be Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. I think the Oklahoma City Thunder will be the top seed in the West in 2024-25 and if Gilgeous-Alexander puts up similar numbers as he did last season, he’d be another strong contender.

Apart from these two, I’d expect the usual suspects in Nikola Jokic, Joel Embiid, and Giannis Antetokounmpo to be in the mix as well. Between them, they have won the award the last six years but I think we will get a new winner this time.

Gilbert Arenas Also Predicted That Luka Doncic Will Win MVP

McGrady isn’t the only one backing Doncic to win the award. Gilbert Arenas also predicted Doncic will win MVP and he thinks the guard will average a triple-double.

“I don’t want to put this type of pressure on him,” said Arenas. “I’d be surprised if he don’t average a triple-double. If you were averaging that many assists with what you had and now you’ve got a guy who can catch and shoot so some of your assists will come without even any effort. You should average a triple-double. And he will probably be the number one candidate for MVP. He’s going to do something that hasn’t been done for a few years… and that’s average a triple-double.”

It’s certainly possible that Doncic ends up averaging a triple-double. He came ever so close last season and if he does pull that off, it would certainly help his case to win MVP.
