In the latest episode of his podcast, NBA veteran Draymond Green got real on the Warriors’ offseason and “one of the best camps” he and Stephen Curry have ever had. During the segment, Green gave a familiar warning about his team that suggests the state of confidence he currently feels in the club.
“The vibes have been on 10 since the preseason. One of the best training camps and hardest training camps… but we was in everything because this is a new thing and you gotta set a tone,” said Green. “So I think we did a great job of setting the tone and we could not have asked for a better training camp, a better preseason than we had. And speaking of being undefeated in preseason, it’s not that we won every preseason game. What it is is when you’ve done it as many times as we’ve done it, there’s a feeling. I’m not saying we gonna go win the championship but I’m saying don’t let us win another fucking championship.”
If those words from Draymond sound familiar, it’s because you’ve heard them before. Back in November of 2021, Draymond said the same thing to his haters after starting the season 12-2. A few months later, Draymond helped the Warriors win their fourth championship over the Boston Celtics.
Unfortunately, things have been a mess ever since for the Warriors. Draymond Green punched Jordan Poole in the face, Andrew Wiggins went missing for personal family issues, and Klay Thompson left the franchise after a miserable season. The team has been in a steep decline over the years and last season was their worst in a long time after falling to 10th in the West.
As it stands, the Warriors are underdogs to win the West, especially against younger and deeper teams like the Thunder, Timberwolves, and the Dallas Mavericks. But after a transformative training camp and an undefeated run in the preseason, Draymond has a special feeling about this group. Just like in 2021, Green sees potential with this year’s Warriors, and it could be a sign of great things to come.
With the 2024-25 campaign officially underway, and the Warriors off to a 1-0 start, it’s still too early to say what kind of trajectory they’re on. Against the Jazz tonight, we’ll get a better sense of how they stack up in the West this year but there’s no reason why anyone should count them out as long as they have Stephen Curry.
The 2x MVP turned 36 in March but he’s still one of the best players in the world with averages of 26.4 points, 5.1 assists, and 4.5 rebounds per game on 45% shooting last season. Between him, Draymond Green, Andrew Wiggins, and Buddy Hield, the Golden State Warriors believe they have enough to challenge the best in the West.
And if they do win another title (the fifth for Curry and Draymond), you can bet the Warriors will be talking and chirping louder than any team before. Even after all they’ve accomplished, the Warriors are still frequently overlooked and competitors like Draymond take great joy in proving the doubters wrong.
