Mark Walter is best known as the CEO of Guggenheim Partners as well as the owner of the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers and the MLB’s Los Angeles Dodgers. Although Walter has created quite a name for himself as an affluent businessman in the sporting world, he is also known for maintaining a low profile. In light of the recent federal probes into his business dealings, however, some new information has come to light regarding his health.
In a recent article by The Wall Street Journal’s Andrew Beaton, Justin Baer, and Margot Patrick, it was revealed that Mark Walter’s health hasn’t been the best over the past few years. Although the businessman has appeared in front of the media on multiple occasions, reports indicate that Walter suffered a stroke during the 2024 World Series. The article mentioned:
“Just 10 days earlier, Walter had spoken on the field after his team advanced to play the New York Yankees. At the time, only those close to Walter knew he was dealing with a medical emergency: Midway through the World Series, he had suffered a stroke, people familiar with the matter said.”
“Since then, Walter’s health status has become a matter of concern inside his business empire, with varying opinions on whether lingering effects from the stroke have impacted his fitness to lead his businesses.”
The Wall Street Journal piece noted that Mark Walter’s stroke was a matter that was brought up by the businessman’s legal team while speaking with investigators. Why this was done, however, remains unknown.
Barring the ongoing investigations, the concerns of people close to him, as well as his associates, are perfectly understandable. As the CEO of Guggenheim Partners, a firm that manages nearly $362 billion in assets, Walter is answerable to several people. When noting his role in TWG Global, an investment conglomerate founded by Mark Walter and Thomas Tull, it is evident that many depend on the 66-year-old to stay healthy.
It goes without saying that the Los Angeles Lakers are among the parties that need Mark Walter to remain in good health. As part of the businessman’s vast portfolio of investments in sports franchises, which includes stakes in the Cadillac Formula One Team and Chelsea FC, the Lakers rely on him for functional purposes.
In the days following his stroke, reports suggest that the Dodgers’ owner “struggled to speak clearly,” which is largely understandable given the severity of his condition. On a positive note, however, the 66-year-old appears to have recovered significantly, as he recently spoke at the White House after the Dodgers won their second consecutive World Series title.
When asked about Mark Walter’s ability to lead despite his health issues, a TWG Global spokesperson stated:
“Mark has the business acumen and judgment required to lead the company as he has done for more than 30 years. For anyone to suggest otherwise is factually inaccurate. He has the full support of shareholders, clients, and business partners.”
For the most part, this is favorable news. However, none of this detracts from the concerns surrounding the ongoing investigation into the businessman and seemingly suspicious transactions dating back to 2019.
While there is no real update on the probe, Walter reportedly gave up his phone and other personal devices for investigation purposes. Needless to say, this could be something that the Purple and Gold should also be worried about.
