Anthony Edwards On Playing With Donte DiVincenzo: “Incredible. I Don’t Need The Ball.”

Anthony Edwards has now played alongside Donte DiVincenzo in two preseason games for the Minnesota Timberwolves and he sure has liked the experience. Following the Timberwolves’ 115-110 loss to the New York Knicks on Sunday, Edwards spoke on what it’s been like to play with DiVincenzo.

“F****** incredible,” Edwards said. “I don’t need the ball. You see it. I’m having fun, man. It’s fun to play with Donte. I haven’t even got to play with Julius (Randle) yet so we see what that look like but playing with Donte is—f***, I’m not going to lie—it’s fun as hell.”

DiVincenzo was playing against his former team for the first time here and things got a bit spicy. DiVincenzo exchanged words with Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau during the game and then clashed with assistant coach Rick Brunson postgame. Edwards was also asked about his new teammate being so motivated for the game and stated he always brings a level of aggressiveness.

“He motivated every night,” Edwards stated. “Even when I used to play against him like busting through screens. When he going downhill, he’s going downhill. So, he’s aggressive with everything that he do, so you can’t be mad at him. He make all the right plays. F****** shoot the cover off the ball. I know New York gonna miss him.”

Well, I’m sure the Knicks will miss DiVincenzo. He was great for them last season and looks like a great fit with Edwards and the Timberwolves now.

DiVincenzo had 15 points, 3 rebounds, 7 assists, and 1 steal against the Knicks. The 27-year-old went 6-11 from the field and 2-5 from beyond the arc on the night and his stretching the floor will be key for the Timberwolves this season after they traded Karl-Anthony Towns to the Knicks.

Towns’ outside shooting was one of the keys to their success last season and Julius Randle, who was sent to Minnesota with DiVincenzo as part of the trade, won’t be able to replicate that. So, the Timberwolves would be counting on the former Villanova guard to shoot as well as he did last season when he shot 40.1% from beyond the arc on 8.7 attempts per game.

Anthony Edwards Would Love To Be Reunited With Karl-Anthony Towns

After the game, Edwards was swapping jerseys with his former teammate Towns when a Knicks fan told him to come to New York when his contract expires. In response, Edwards said he would love to be reunited with Towns.

While some alarm bells started to ring in Minnesota with that comment, I wouldn’t look too much into it. Edwards and Towns formed a special bond in their four seasons as teammates and it’s only natural that he would love a reunion. Also, the guard’s contract is expiring in 2029, so he’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

As for Edwards’ play in this game against the Knicks, he put up 31 points, 2 rebounds, and 3 assists. The 23-year-old torched that defense and I expect him to dominate in the 2024-25 season too. Kendrick Perkins thinks Edwards could win his first MVP this upcoming season and while I believe he will be in the mix, I don’t think he’s going to win the award this early in his career.
