Weeks after it was confirmed that LaMelo Ball had been traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves, reports have now surfaced that the 24-year-old has been sued in Charlotte. The former Hornets star is facing allegations of owing over $100,000 in missed rent checks to his landlord in Charlotte.
The lawsuit, which was submitted to Mecklenburg Superior Court on Monday, is an extension of the allegations made earlier this year by Agape Property Management against Jermaine Jackson, Ball’s manager.
Jackson was previously evicted by a judge after the company claimed that Jackson owed over $280,000 in unpaid rent and HOA compliance fees. The company is holding Ball accountable for a part of that money as well, noted the Charlotte Observer.
A copy of the lawsuit claims that in December 2020, LaMelo Ball and Agape Property Management Group made a deal for the NBA player to rent two luxurious apartments in a posh uptown Charlotte condominium complex.
In the lawsuit, Agape Property Management Group, which is purportedly partially owned by Cam Newton, claimed that Ball subleased one of the homes to his manager and mentor, former NBA player Jermaine Jackson, while he lived in the other.
After years of cohabitation, LaMelo Ball decided to purchase his apartment in May 2024 for $2.47 million. But he kept subleasing the second spot to Jackson, according to the lawsuit.
In the lawsuit, Agape Property Management Group claimed that Ball and Jackson fell behind on paying the unit’s rent in the following months.
“As of July 1, 2026,” Agape Property Management Group wrote in its lawsuit, “the Defendants owed the Plaintiff rent exceeding $181,500.00.” The company also alleged the Ball and Jackson “accrued over $90,000.00 in unpaid HOA compliance fines.”
“The Defendants’ failure to pay rent while failing to leave the premises has caused the Plaintiff substantial and potentially long-lasting harm,” they further added, “including HOA non-compliance fines, lost rental income, and other monetary damages.”
Ball’s reputation instantly backfired on social media, and he faced backlash from fans as well for facing an issue over an amount that is negligible for an NBA player who is earning millions.
This lawsuit comes over a month after LaMelo Ball moved to Minnesota as a result of his blockbuster trade to the Timberwolves. The team will hope that this matter does not drag on and distract the star on the court.
Several news outlets reached out to Ball, Jackson, and Newton’s representatives for a comment, but all the parties involved have not yet made a public statement on the matter.
