As exciting as this year’s free agency period has been, it is safe to say that no piece of news has been as shocking as LeBron James‘ signing with the Philadelphia 76ers. With James joining a new team in the final years of his career with the intention of contending for the title, the superstar also hopes to add to his legacy.
Needless to say, LeBron James’ signing was viewed favorably by fans in Philadelphia. Given that his arrival has already generated upwards of $430 million in revenue in the city, his impact has already been felt. To that point, 76ers legend Allen Iverson was also happy to see James come to the City of Brotherly Love.
While speaking about his reaction to the news on “The Stephen A. Smith Show,” Iverson shared:
“Just ecstatic, man. You know I’m just happy for the city of Philadelphia, man. For the team, you know what I mean? The type of player he is, the type of person he is. I’m just happy, man. He brings a lot, you know what I mean? He really is the answer.”
Allen Iverson’s legacy in Philadelphia is etched into the hearts of the fan base. In this regard, for Iverson to refer to LeBron James as “The Answer,” which was famously his moniker, is resoundingly positive.
It is also worth noting that Iverson’s reaction could be attributed to his close personal relationship with the 41-year-old superstar. However, when asked whether he was directly involved in any dealings, Iverson responded:
“Nah, man. You know I stay in my own lane. That was something that I know was probably hard for him to do with his family, Cleveland, and other spots he was thinking about going to. I knew it was definitely hard enough, so I didn’t try to put any added pressure on the situation. I just sat back and hoped for the best. It was a blessing that we were able to get him to the city and have a chance to win the championship.”
Needless to say, Iverson’s wishes came true. After a long period of waiting, James finally signed a two-year, $8 million deal with the 76ers, solidifying his place on one of the best rosters in the NBA.
Paired with the likes of Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid, Jaylen Brown, and V.J. Edgecombe, LeBron James is theoretically in the best environment to win. Hence, when asked about his expectations for the team next season, Allen Iverson stated:
“It’s definitely championship-or-bust, man. I mean, that’s the added piece that we needed. Obviously, you put him on any team, to me, you definitely have a chance. But obviously, a whole lot of things got to go right during the season, definitely health.”
“But as far as the leadership, the talent, the wars that he’s been in, and him being familiar with every type of situation that happens on the basketball court, he just boosts the percentage of any team having a chance to win a championship and having big-time success. He’s one of them ones, man. He’s the king for a reason.”
The “championship-or-bust” narrative surrounding the 76ers’ campaign seems to be the consensus, and for good reason. Although it is largely based on James being in the final years of his career, similar concerns are being raised about Joel Embiid and how long he will remain at his peak.
While health remains a crucial factor, on paper, this 76ers team looks dominant, and with some key roster additions this summer, they look like genuine contenders.
In this regard, Allen Iverson’s excitement and enthusiasm for the city of Philadelphia are understandable. Having led the 76ers to the NBA Finals in 2001, Iverson is familiar with the city’s energy when things are clicking. Now, with LeBron James joining a star-studded squad, Iverson and the fans can be optimistic about feeling that way again.
