Rajon Rondo completed his buyout with the Memphis Grizzlies, as per Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. Woj further reported that the 35-year-old is expected to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers ahead of the 2021-22 NBA season.
Rondo played for the purple and gold throughout the 2018-19 to 2019-20 seasons. In fact, Rondo played a crucial part in helping the organization win the 2020 NBA title.
If he returns to the team, it will be quite interesting how the Lakers will play. They already have an amazing roster and adding Rondo to it will only improve it.
An interesting fact is that if Rondo joins the team, he will still be younger than 5 other players on the team! Considering the two-time NBA champion is himself 35 years old, it might seem a little shocking.
The players that are older than him are LeBron James (36 years old), Carmelo Anthony (37 years old), Trevor Ariza (36 years old), Marc Gasol (36 years old), Dwight Howard (35 years old).
Although the Lakers are one of the oldest teams in NBA history, they are still the favorites to come out of the Western Conference.
The only point of concern is how well they can load manage when entering the postseason. If they can manage that, they might actually pull off something amazing.
After all, Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls achieved this feat back in 1998. For comparison, the Jordan-led team was just 0.4 years younger than the current Los Angeles Lakers squad.
The Bulls not only won the title that season, but they also booked a spot in the history books by completing two 3-peats. Furthermore, MJ solidified his spot as the Greatest Of All Time (GOAT) by winning his sixth ring.
If LeBron’s Lakers can pull off something similar, he will win the fifth ring of his career and get a step closer to Jordan in the GOAT debate.
