Rasheed Wallace Calls Out His Former Coach Doc Rivers And Shares The Story Of How The Celtics Players Didn't Listen To Him

Doc Rivers is currently sitting on the hot seat following the Philadelphia 76ers' third straight second-round exit under his coaching.

Former NBA player Rasheed Wallace recently blasted Rivers for his outdated coaching style. Wallace believes his former head coach has failed to earn the respect of his players as he doesn't make adjustments when the going gets tough.

"You gotta get somebody in there that the players respect. He doesn’t make adjustments. That’s just from being in the locker room with him for that one season. That seems to be his biggest knock. If his team is up, you don’t really have to coach s**t. When you are in the trenches, and you are going against another team and another good coach, you gotta be more than a locker room manager.

"He depends more on the players to make those adjustments that coach; you have to come in there and make adjustments as well, especially if what you’re trying hasn’t worked. When we were in Boston, as far as the players out there on the floor, we were the ones that made adjustments. The way that Glenn is, he’s not that hard-nosed coach that we need. Nobody wanted to believe me; now look."

Rasheed Wallace was a member of the Boston Celtics in the 2009-10 NBA season. That season, the Celtics reached the NBA Finals but fell short vs. the Los Angeles Lakers. Although Wallace may have played just a single season under Rivers, it was enough for him to gauge the flaws in his coaching style.

Following the 2023 NBA playoffs exit, Doc Rivers has a record of 6-10 in Game 7s during his coaching career. It includes blowing three 3-1 leads and four 3-2 leads.

After days of rumors about his future, the Philadelphia 76ers decided to fire Rivers. To be honest, it doesn't come off as a surprise.

Did The Philadelphia 76ers Make The Right Decision By Firing Doc Rivers?

The first priority for the 76ers was to keep their duo of Joel Embiid and James Harden happy.

Considering there were rumors that Harden would leave the team if the 76ers brought back Rivers, it was indeed the correct call.

Moreover, if Harden left the 76ers, Joel Embiid wouldn't hesitate to leave the team as well.

All things considered, the Sixers parting ways with Rivers will most likely benefit them in the longer run. As for Rivers, he may still find a job in the NBA, but certainly not with a championship contender.
