Shaquille O’Neal has always given Michael Jordan his respect and validated his GOAT status, but he isn’t above making a few funny jokes at MJ’s expense.
In 2021, a video of Shaquille O’Neal distributing free pizza and trying to spread some happiness went viral. But what was truly epic was his conversation with a little girl who asked him if he was Michael Jordan.
The little girl came up to Shaq and asked, “Excuse me, are you Michael Jordan?” To which O’Neal hilariously responded, “I’m better than Michael Jordan. My name is Shaq O’Neal. I’m giving out free pizza. Ask your grandma if you can take pizza from me. I’m the delivery guy. Make sure you always listen to your grandma, ok? Now you know my name, I’m way better than Michael Jordan. Got it?”
Shaquille O’Neal isn’t better than Michael Jordan when it comes to the number of championships won, MJ has six to his four. Jordan is clear in the number of MVPs, he had five while Shaq only has one. And he also has three FInals MVPs more than Shaq. To his credit though, Shaq dominated the game just as intensely as Michael Jordan did, if not more, during the early 2000s. And in any case, he seemed to have been joking around with the little girl, it was a wholesome moment.
Shaquille O’Neal Has Repeatedly Said Michael Jordan Is The GOAT
What makes this whole thing even funnier is that when seriously asked about it, Shaquille O’Neal has always called Michael Jordan the GOAT. The conversation got heated after LeBron James broke Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s scoring record, but Shaq was still clear on who the greatest ever is.
“It’s an interesting question. I think the greatest player ever is Michael Jordan. LeBron is about to do something that hasn’t been done in a long time and it’ll move his name up there. But for me, it’s always Dr. J, Michael Jordan, Magic, and those guys. I do look at LeBron, but I also like listening to people’s opinions. Listen, Jordan was the greatest in my opinion.”
Shaquille O’Neal was so dominant, no one would begrudge him calling himself the greatest ever. But he has always been humble when it matters and entertaining when it’s the right time. There’s a reason he is both respected and loved by the NBA community years after his retirement.
