As the 2024 Olympic games approach, Team USA is preparing for a tough fight ahead. As one of the team’s top participants, Stephen Curry was in attendance for the reopening of training camp and he spared a few words with the media before the action started.

“We’ve got 39 days or so to get locked in to go get this gold medal. 12 amazing, talented guys ready to come together for one goal so I’m hyped for it all. It’s been 10 years since I’ve been on Team USA back in 2014 so I’m hyped to be back.”

Curry, 36, was among the more surprising inclusions on the Team USA roster. While he remains one of the best players in the world, it’s been 10 years since his last stint with the team in 2014 when he helped lead the USA to the gold. As a 2x gold medal winner already, Steph had nothing to prove by signing up to play this year but it might help distract him from the complicated situation with the Warriors.

To no fault of his own, it’s been a summer of change for No. 30. In the span of a few months, he had to watch as he and his team went from a West dynasty to a borderline play-in team. Then he had to sit back and watch as his longtime teammate and friend, Klay Thompson, pursued a new path to sign with a team that could pay him what he wanted.

Curry sent out a heartfelt goodbye to Klay on Instagram and they will always be close, but it’s clear that things will never be the same again. Even amid all the chaos around him, however, Curry must shift his focus to Team USA.

In the aftermath of a fourth-place finish at the FIBA World Cup, Team USA is desperate for a win and to show the world that they are still at the top of the sport. Instead of compiling B-list stars like in years past, the U.S. has brought in all the top guys, including Curry, LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Joel Embiid, Anthony Davis, Anthony Edwards, and Kawhi Leonard.

While some might call it overkill, others would argue that it’s necessary for Team USA to re-establish their dominance of the sort. As superstars like Nikola Jokic, Luka Doncic, and Giannis Antetokounmpo put their stamp on the league the Americans want to make a statement that they still produce the best NBA athletes.

This summer will be their chance to prove that return to the system of old where they were at the top of the food chain. Steph, a 4x NBA champion, will be the key to making it happen and if he and LeBron James can find chemistry together, it could be all the team needs to realize their potential and dominate like they used to in the days of the ‘Dream Team.’
