The Los Angeles Lakers are on the verge of winning their first NBA Championship in 10 years. With LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and a very capable cast of role-players, it’s clear to see why the team has achieved so much success this year.
But why not shoot for more? This offseason, a handful of great rotational players will become available on the free-agent market and L.A. should (and probably will) consider taking some of them in.
Considering that, the question then becomes: who?
There are no shortage of available players, but the most intriguing options might actually be two guys who currently play for their biggest rivals: Montrezl Harrell and Marcus Morris. They each obviously bring a lot to the table and could help add major depth to the lineup for relatively cheap deals, but could you imagine the narrative that’d go along with it?
A year after the Clippers’ collapse, two of their best role players jump ship to head to Lakerland? If they end up getting back to the Finals with those two on board, NBA Twitter might just explode.
On a more serious note, though, it’s perfectly reasonable to expect some changes for the Clippers. As Trez and Morris become free agents this offseason, the possibility is strong that they end up signing somewhere else. Locker room drama and the uncertain future ahead for this franchise has made things extremely uneasy.
The Lakers, so long as they have the money, will likely be big contenders for almost every player in free agency, including some of the guys who have been groomed to beat them this past season. Winning is usually a pretty appealing component for free agents and the Lakers have proven they’re more equipped for success than the Clippers right now.
For the latter, this whole thing would be a nightmarish scenario and, with the clocks dwindling on the contracts of Paul George and Kawhi Leonard, they’ve got to do everything they can to ensure they end their next season on a high note.
They hope that will include both Harrell and Morris, but there’s just no way of knowing that for certain right now.
