John Stockton has somehow become a controversial figure around the NBA world. The all-time assists leader has been quite critical of the COVID-19 vaccine, even supporting Kyrie Irving when the Brooklyn Nets superstar refused to take it and misses a big chunk of the 2021/22 NBA season.

Well, the Utah Jazz legend isn’t done, and he keeps making headlines for non-basketball-related issues, chiming in on more serious matters, and expressing his opinion regardless of what other people might think.

Recently, the player wrote a letter to a federal judge to support a woman involved in the riot at the US Capitol in January 2021. At the time, former POTUS Donald Trump held a rally in Washington D.C. and some of his followers decided to riot the capitol, leaving a big mess behind them.

Stockton knows one of the women that were there that day and tried to use his name to help her. Chris Rosvoglou of The Spun revealed that the player wrote a heartfelt letter trying to help Janet Buhler:

“Janet Buhler is one of the kindest people I have ever known,” Stockton wrote. “She has spent a lifetime helping her family, including her husband, care for their patients. She goes to church regularly, volunteers at the homeless shelter, and teaches music endlessly, piano and violin, to children in her own home.”

Stockton continued: “I frankly can not imagine that Janet could knowingly break the law, nor be involved in anything destructive, ever, no matter the situation. In my opinion, Janet Buhler is a quality person of high character.”

John is trying to do anything in his hands to help Mrs. Buhler. It’s unclear if this can make an impact on the judge’s decision, and we’ll have to wait and see if Stockton’s message can make a change. Buhler is expected to be sentenced on June 1, so we have to wait a couple of days to know Buhler’s fate.
