Zion Williamson’s future earnings are at risk, with a potential loss of $126 million looming over the final three years of his contract if he fails to meet specific weigh-in checkpoints and playing time requirements. The final three years of Zion Williamson’s deal are no longer guaranteed after he played in only 29 games last year, per Mike Vorkunov.

The New Orleans Pelicans, while celebrating the extension signed by Williamson in July 2022, strategically incorporated clauses in response to his injury history and playing time concerns.

By missing 22+ games last year, Zion Williamson triggered a clause that turned the salary he's owed for 2025-26, 2026-27 and 2027-28 from guaranteed to non-guaranteed.

According to The Athletic’s review of the contract, the non-guaranteed status of the 2025-26, 2026-27, and 2027-28 seasons was triggered after Williamson played only 29 games last season, missing more than 22 games. The Pelicans now have the contractual power to waive Williamson after the 2024-25 season without incurring financial ramifications.

Williamson’s contract introduces unusual measures directly linking guaranteed salary with games played and includes specific weigh-in checkpoints. His weight in pounds, combined with his body fat percentage, must stay below 295. Failure to meet these criteria puts portions of his salary at risk.

The contract further protects the Pelicans against potential issues with Williamson’s right foot’s fifth metatarsal. If he experiences a fracture, stress injury, or a “hardware failure” related to the previous injury, half of his base salary for the 2024-25 season becomes non-guaranteed if the team releases him.

While the contract’s complexity is unusual, it reflects a trend in the NBA, where teams seek injury and playing time protections in significant contracts. For the Pelicans, this contract provides flexibility and a safety net, potentially easing the decision to trade Williamson.

To regain portions of his guaranteed salary, Williamson must pass weigh-in checkpoints and meet game thresholds for the 2024-25 season and subsequent seasons. Vesting dates also determine when his salary becomes fully guaranteed, offering both the team and player specific milestones to work towards.

For Williamson, maintaining his health, conditioning, and on-court performance is not only crucial for his career but also to secure the financial rewards tied to his contract. With $126 million on the line, the stakes are high for the young star to navigate the challenges and uncertainties presented by this intricate contractual arrangement.

Zion Willamson Needs To Turn His Career Around Quickly

Zion Williamson’s career trajectory is at a crucial juncture, demanding a swift turnaround in focus and performance. Currently averaging 22.0 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game, with shooting percentages of 57.8% from the field and 28.6% from three-point range, he falls short of the superstar promise he held when compared to LeBron James before being drafted.

LeBron James, now in his 21st season and nearing 39 years of age, stands as a testament to disciplined fitness and commitment. Despite his age, James remains one of the fittest players in the league. In contrast, 23-year-old Zion needs to prioritize his health and conditioning to fulfill his potential.

The financial stakes are high for Zion, with a clause in his max contract that links weight limits to guaranteed earnings. If he exceeds the specified weight limit, he could face financial consequences, potentially losing $126 million in the final three years of his contract after the 2024-25 season.

Critics, including NBA legends Shaquille O’Neal, Charles Barkley, and Stephen A. Smith, have criticized Zion for neglecting his fitness. Reports suggest that his work ethic has been a concern for the New Orleans Pelicans since drafting him in 2019. Former teammate JJ Redick openly expressed disappointment, emphasizing that Zion could achieve more with dedication and professionalism.

The recent NBA In-Season Tournament semifinal drew attention to Zion’s visible weight issues, prompting strong remarks from Stephen A. Smith, who highlighted the noticeable decline in Zion’s energy levels on the court.

The Pelicans’ management has stressed the importance of improved diet and conditioning, but reports indicate Zion’s lack of receptiveness to their advice. His career’s success hinges on a combination of talent, hard work, and a commitment to health and fitness. The Pelicans organization and veteran teammates hope Zion will prioritize these aspects, ensuring a successful and enduring career. As the pressures mount, Zion Williamson must quickly realize the gravity of the situation and make the necessary changes to secure a promising future in the NBA.
