The infamous “banana boat” crew was made famous a few years ago when a picture featuring LeBron James, Chris Paul, and Dwyane Wade on a banana boat made its rounds around the internet.

Though there was much speculation about the friends possible teaming up, it has yet to materialize. According to Cp3 in a chat with Taylor Rooks on “Take It There,” they almost had a chance to pull it off before something got in the way.

“Me, Bron (James) and D (Wade) almost had a chance one time, but we didn’t know who was gonna wear No. 3,” Paul said.

Despite being under major pressure from Rooks to elaborate on that comment, Paul dodged saying anything else on the subject except to never rule the scenario out (12:20 mark).

The four friends (Melo, Chris, Bron, and Wade) have a bond that goes beyond the game of basketball. And as the four close out their NBA careers, the possibility of a partnership continues to shrink.

Their best chance to team up was in 2010 when James was a free agent, when Paul was coming off an injury-riddled season in which his New Orleans Hornets had missed the playoffs, and when Carmelo Anthony was nearing the end of his chapter in Denver. Whatever happened that summer, they weren’t able to pull off a team-up project involving all four. Only James and Wade were able to join sides.

Considering they’ve had a number of chances to come together over the years, it might just not be in the cards for them.

Alas, we’ll have to leave the idea of a Banana boat team in our heads — where it has been all along.
