In an appearance on NBA Countdown this week, former Warriors GM Bob Myers gave his honest take on the Jimmy Butler saga in Miami. After crediting his skills and experience, Myers explained how drama is part of the package when it comes to dealing with Butler.

“His comments about ‘it’s none of your business’ are getting to him a little bit. That’s not his nature, that’s not who he is. That tells you something about how he’s feeling about it. He’s tired of it. He’s trying to coach the team to win basketball games. Pat Riley, by his statements, is tired of it. These people have had tremendous success in the NBA. But there’s a good quote on drama, it says ‘drama does not just walk into your life. Either you create it, invite it, or associate with it. Guess who’s been around some drama? Jimmy Butler. You want Jimmy Butler? Part of the package is drama. And I like Jimmy Butler, I think he’s one of the most competitive players the league has ever seen… but Jimmy Butler has decided ‘I’m done’ and it seems like he’s doing everything he can to create disruption.”

As a former executive for the Golden State Warriors and the man behind the Stephen Curry dynasty, it’s no surprise that Myers offered a different perspective on this conversation. While many fans and experts blame the Heat for failing to accommodate Butler, Myers points the finger at Butler for sowing discourse and division within the organization.

Butler, 35, recently made his return from a 7-game suspension but his future remains uncertain. After causing so much chaos with his trade request, the situation was deemed unsalvageable until he announced his return to the court in an MJ-inspired statement on social media.

The word on the street is that Butler is still looking for a trade from the Heat and many fear that he could take drastic measures to try and force Pat Riley’s hand. After all, it’s not the first time that Butler has caused drama within his organization.

After leaving the Bulls in 2017, Myers was with the Timberwolves for just 69 games before things turned sour and he left them behind. He clashed with his teammates and went viral over a profanity-laced tirade during practice.

This all came before his stint with the 76ers for the 2018-19 season. Butler was supposed to be the final piece of their championship roster but he clashed with the stars right away which is what led the franchise to choose Tobias Harris over him in free agency.

With so much baggage and practically no playoff success to show for it, you could say Butler was damaged goods when he finally joined the Heat in 2019. But that didn’t stop Miami from bringing him in and they likely still have no regrets about it now.

But for all the drama and chaos that Jimmy can bring, he’s also got enough talent and skill to step up when needed and it’s the reason why he’s taken the Heat to two NBA Finals runs over the past 5 years.

For any team wanting to trade for Butler, they must understand the risk involved. With a track record for sowing chaos, he has the potential to destabilize any NBA locker room. But in the right situation, he could be the one addition that takes a team to the next level.
