Amid tough times for the Sacramento Kings, De’Aaron Fox and his teammates are caught in the middle of major uncertainty. But when asked by Keegan Murray if this stretch was the worst of his career, Fox explained that he’s endured far, far worse.
“A week and a half ago, Keegan asked me if this was a bottom five moment in my career,” said Fox. “And I told him, ‘To be honest, you came at a great time.’ We were 13-15 or 13-16 at the time he asked me this and I was like, ‘Keegan, if we were 13-16 in my first three years in the league that was fu—in great.’”
There is no denying that the Kings are in rough shape right now. After a five-game losing streak earlier this month, the franchise parted ways with Mike Brown, the guy who led them through some of their most successful seasons. Under his leadership, the Kings became a respectable foe in the Western Conference and looked to be trending upward before their fall from grace.
This season has been a nightmare from the very beginning and with the new arrival of DeMar DeRozan struggling to fit in, there was no quick fix to their ongoing problems. Eventually, the front office settled on Brown as the scapegoat and they fired him in a rather undignified manner.
So with the Kings sitting at 12th in the West, the rumblings have begun to indicate that Fox may be growing restless with the franchise. At the very least, teams across the league are preparing for a potential pursuit of Fox now that the likelihood of his eventual departure has greatly increased.
Of course, despite how bad it looks now, there was a time when things were worse for Fox and the Kings. In his rookie season, Fox only managed to go 27-55 with the Kings and they were 12th in the West. In the 2019-20 campaign, the Kings finished 12th again at 31-41 and were even worse in the 2021-22 season with a record of just 30-52.
At 14-19, the Kings are on track to win roughly 34 games and while it’s hardly a good record, Fox has been in a much worse position during his career. In fact, as a franchise, the Kings have seen much darker days than this.
Despite their record, the Kings have a lot of things going for them, including a pair of stars in De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis and some solid young talent in Keegan Murray and Keon Ellis. They have a positive culture and a rabid fanbase that made itself known with their legendary “light the beam” tradition.
In truth, there have been worse times to be a Kings fan and now is not the time to panic if you’re rooting for the organization. Still, they must keep De’Aaron Fox happy if they want to keep their positive momentum. Whether it’s now or right before the deadline, we can expect the Kings to make some moves this season and do whatever they can to get their team back on track.
The next game for the Kings is on January 1st, 2025, at Golden 1 Center against the Philadelphia 76ers. On January 3rd, they face the Memphis Grizzlies at 10:00 PM EST before heading to Chase Center for a game against the Golden State Warriors on Saturday, January 5th, at 8:30 PM EST.
