Jaylen Brown is largely viewed as one of the best two-way players in the NBA. After being forced to embrace a larger role with the Boston Celtics last season, the 29-year-old thrived, helping the Celtics secure the second seed and even finishing sixth in MVP voting.
In many ways, the 2025-26 season was the best year of Brown’s career, though advanced statistics may suggest otherwise. Considering he averaged 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game, he was certainly among the most impactful players in the NBA. Unfortunately, it would appear that he has been slighted once again.
The launch of NBA 2K27 has led to several players receiving updated ratings, including Philadelphia’s newest superteam. For players who made significant jumps this past season, this was a largely promising sign. However, the same cannot be said for Jaylen Brown, who seemed quite offended by his latest overall rating. While guessing a player purely based on their 2K attributes, Brown responded:
“I would say mid-range kind of gives it away. I would say this is me, but the mid-range is probably a little low. I’m a mid-range spammer. I feel a bit offended. I feel like my passing should be a lot better.”
For context, Brown’s mid-range was rated a respectable 90. But considering his status as an elite mid-range scorer, the 29-year-old has every reason to feel underwhelmed with this score.
The interviewer noted that many players were unhappy with their overall ratings. On that note, Brown reacted:
“What was it last year? 93 last year… So how did I go down?”

Jaylen Brown notably had a 93 rating in NBA 2K26. While he was certainly impactful, averaging 22.2 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game that season, the superstar’s performance was clearly a class below his 2025-26 campaign. Despite this, Brown was rated 91 overall in NBA 2K27, forcing several fans to question the scoring criteria.
Jaylen Brown Continues To Be Underestimated
In many ways, the reduced rating, especially after the season he had, should be received as a sign of disrespect. However, this seems to be becoming a bit of a theme for Jaylen Brown this summer.
Before he was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers, there were rumors within the Celtics’ organization concerning his abilities. With advanced stats rating him as less efficient, many began questioning the merit of retaining him. On the other hand, he was also exposed to media vitriol, which didn’t necessarily lessen the burden.
Even after he was traded to Philadelphia, this narrative continued. Despite being an elite player, some have hinted that Jaylen Brown may play as the third or fourth option with the 76ers. Additionally, concerning the trade rumors linking him to the Warriors, reports indicated that Golden State’s front office doubted Brown’s ability to lead the franchise after Curry’s departure. Needless to say, this seems misplaced after leading an undermanned Boston team to a second-place finish.
Overall, this offseason has been marked by many either underestimating or disrespecting Jaylen Brown. While this could weigh heavily on the five-time All-Star’s shoulders, it is safe to say that he is more motivated than ever.
Brown has outlined that winning the title is a priority, and he is more inspired than ever to do so. Given his commitment to getting into the best shape of his life this offseason, the 29-year-old will be entering the campaign with a chip on his shoulder.
Realistically, Jaylen Brown’s production may not be on par with the previous season, primarily since the 76ers have no shortage of scoring options. However, given his willingness to sacrifice and his ability to take over games at the drop of a hat, there is no doubting how he can impact winning.
