LeBron James is actively working to bring the Lakers new talent, as he already reached out to Klay Thompson. Adrian Wojnarowski reported that LeBron James called Klay Thompson as soon as free agency began at 6 PM on Sunday night. He added that he doesn’t expect there to be a conclusion to these negotiations tonight.

“He and his agent… are talking with a number of teams including the Lakers and the Dallas Mavericks. They’ve had conversations tonight. I’m told LeBron James called Klay Thompson right when free agency opened at 6 PM Eastern. Reached out, and talked to Klay Thompson. The expectation I have right now is these conversations, this negotiation will go into tomorrow.”

“There probably will not be a resolution tonight but certainly, Dallas, the Lakers, the Clippers are working to be involved in this. Those are the prominent teams for Klay Thompson, whose career is going to be somewhere other than Golden State once this free agency period is over.”

James has long been an admirer of Klay Thompson, with him even trying to coax him into joining the Lakers when he was a free agent in 2019. Thompson chose to re-sign with the Warriors then, but this time around, it could be possible to see Thompson rep the purple and gold going into a new season.

Thompson grew up a Lakers fan, as his father, Mychal Thompson, was part of the Showtime Lakers during their later years between 1987 and 1991. Thompson got to see his father win two NBA championships with the Lakers and would like to replicate that accomplishment in his career.

Thompson reportedly is willing to take a pay cut to join either the Lakers or the Clippers. It would behoove the Lakers to close out a deal as they currently are lacking some serious threats on their roster aside from James and Anthony Davis.

End Of The Splash Bros Era In Golden State

With Klay Thompson expected to leave the Warriors, this will mark the end of the Splash Bros era for the franchise. The monicker was given to Thompson and his teammate Stephen Curry, as they became the greatest shooting backcourt in NBA history.

Thompson’s seen a massive decline in his performances since returning from back-to-back knee injuries that kept him out for two years. His defense has declined massively, and his shooting inconsistency is far more pronounced now than it ever was during the Warriors’ dominant run in the late 2010s.

Thompson last season played 77 games and averaged 17.9 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists. But Thompson grew discontent with the Warriors, and a big reason for him leaving the franchise was his feeling disrespected by the offer the Warriors made to him.

Thompson’s future will be watched by many NBA fans, as he is one of the big names available in this free agency period. Thompson is one of the best shooters in the NBA, and the Lakers could definitely use his shooting beyond the arc if they hope to make some kind of championship push next season under JJ Redick.
