Klay Thompson is feeling disrespected by the contract offer he has received from the Golden State Warriors. Chris Haynes discussed the situation on NBA TV, highlighting the stark contrast between Thompson’s situation and that of Paul George with the Clippers.

“So remember I said the Paul George Clippers situation is not toxic. It’s not contentious. That’s probably the opposite of what’s going on with Klay Thompson and the Golden State Warriors.”

“I know firsthand that Klay is very disappointed where negotiations have gotten to this point to the fact, that he’s looking elsewhere and I spoke with few members of the Golden State Warriors. They believe that Klay Thompson is gone.”

“Yeah, obviously there’s still some time for things to be worked out. But the Dallas Mavericks are a team that will be pursuing Klay Thompson as well as the Los Angeles Lakers. So again, does Klay or will Klay, I should say, take a pay cut and go to those pursuing teams.”

“That’s a rival team of the Golden State Warriors. I know just from a competitive standpoint, that’s something that intrigues Klay. But is he really willing to walk away from a salary?”

“I believe the Warriors are probably offering him an annually low 20 million type of contract. So if you’re willing to walk away from that because you feel disrespected, it looks like he is. And so that is definitely something to monitor.”

According to Haynes, Thompson is very disappointed with the current state of negotiations and is actively looking at other teams. Members of the Warriors organization also believe that Thompson is likely to leave the team.

The Warriors‘ offer to Thompson reportedly stands at an annual salary of around $20 million, a figure Thompson finds insulting given his contributions and legacy with the team.

This perceived lack of respect has led Thompson to consider other options, with the Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Lakers showing significant interest. The Lakers, in particular, present an intriguing option for Thompson, given his ties to Los Angeles and the storied rivalry between the Lakers and the Warriors.

Last season, Thompson averaged 17.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game, while shooting 43.2% from the field and 38.7% from three-point range. Although these numbers represent one of his worst seasons, Thompson still has plenty to offer. Despite coming off severe injuries, Thompson has demonstrated his resilience and maintained a high level of performance.

The Warriors are reportedly looking to facilitate a sign-and-trade deal, which would allow them to receive valuable assets in return for Thompson. This approach indicates that the team recognizes Thompson’s value but is constrained by financial considerations and the new CBA’s luxury tax rules.

Thompson’s departure from the Warriors would mark the end of an era. His move to another team, particularly a rival like the Lakers, would significantly alter the landscape of the Western Conference. For Thompson, joining a team like the Lakers would not only mean playing closer to home but also competing alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis, offering a fresh start and a renewed chance at a title.

As the situation develops, the Warriors must weigh the benefits of retaining a franchise cornerstone against the financial realities of the new CBA. Meanwhile, Thompson’s decision will likely hinge on finding a team that offers both a competitive salary and a genuine chance to compete for championships.
