Former Los Angeles Laker James Worthy has no plans of watching HBO’s ‘Winning Time: The Rise Of The Lakers Dynasty’.
The controversial sports drama that focuses on the rise of the Showtime Lakers has a second season coming up next month, and Worthy, on his part had no intentions of watching it. He did emphasize watching Hulu’s docu-series, Legacy: The True Story Of The LA Lakers.
“We never talked about ‘Winning Time’ because we were never involved in it. We talked a lot about ‘The Legacy,’ so if you really want to know the truth, go watch ‘The Legacy’ on Hulu and get the real deal. If you like satire and stuff, then go watch ‘Winning Time’,” Worthy told TMZ Sports.
He added that Legacy was a far more accurate representation of the facts of what actually happened in the 80s with the Lakers as opposed to the satirical version.
‘Winning Time’s’ comedic take on the Lakers wasn’t appreciated by most of the players who played for the franchise during the time. And while ‘Legacy’ charts a more comprehensive take on the whole timeline, there’s no doubt both shows have been thoroughly entertaining.
What Is HBO’s ‘Winning Time’ Season 2 About?
Based on true events documented by Jeff Pearlman, Season 2 of “Winning Time” will likely pick up soon after the 1979-1980 championship season, covered in Season 1 of the hit HBO show.
According to Esquire, the new season will “depict cover the history of the Lakers, and its rivalry with the Boston Celtics, and the off-court personal lives of team members and coaches, from 1980 to 1984.”
The show’s co-creator Max Borenstein told Deadline:
“This is a series about a dynasty. And what comes after winning that first is not just winning another. It’s exponentially harder,” co-creator Max Borenstein said. “Everything that comes with winning and celebrity and all of the sort of challenges — especially at this moment in the ’80s — Magic and his nemesis Bird.”
Safe to say, the offseason will have some basketball content pouring in, and the world will tune in, even if Worthy won’t.
