Fred VanVleet revealed his take on Kyrie Irving’s tumultuous relationship with the media.

“If you peel back the layers of every player in the NBA, I’m sure you’ll find some opinions that wouldn’t mesh with what the rest of the world wants to see,” said VanVleet, to Fox Sports.

“Now, Kyrie speaks on them more frequently than anybody else, but once we get deeper and deeper into what people think and feel about every little thing, you’ll find some friction there. I think that’s probably what it is with him.”

He further added: “He’s been in a lot of headlines the last few years,” VanVleet said. “He’s certainly made some mistakes, but that’s for him to deal with. Once you get caught up in that mainstream media wave, it’s a whirlwind. If you don’t climb your way out by doing or saying what they want you to do or say, the hole just keeps getting deeper and deeper. He rebelled a little bit against that.”

FVV isn’t wrong in his thoughts. While Irving has been one of the bonafide superstars in the league, he is also one of those candidates pretty much in the eye of the storm.

Be it the time he missed a significant chunk of games for the Brooklyn Nets for his stance on the COVID-19 vaccine or his promotion of an anti-semitic movie on Twitter that saw him suspended for a few games, Irving has been in the media for various reasons.

But what cannot be denied is the fact that he is a man of his word and he has his own take on issues outside of hooping — whether the world likes it or not.

Kyrie Irving Is Still One Of The Most Loved Players In The League

In the same feature by Ric Buchler for Fox Sports, Donte DiVincenzo was one of the players who lauded Irving for his personality.

“It’s something small but him wearing them brings a lot of attention,” DiVincenzo said. “He shows a lot of love to other guys in the league. He’s never one to say, ‘I’m better than X, Y, and Z.’ It’s, ‘He’s a bad m***** f*****, I really love his game.’ He’ll give you your props and that’s not common in the NBA.”

And that speaks volumes about how the 31-year-old has a name for himself in the NBA. Irving may have caused chaos with his ideals, but he surely has the friends like family in the league who have backed him to the hilt.

Now, all eyes will be on where he plays next.
