The 2023 NBA Finals are proving to the entire world that Jamal Murray is a genuine playoff riser. He proved it in the 2020 bubble and has come back from an ACL injury to be even more potent in this Finals run.

Murray revealed some of his training methods to get to where he is in an interview with Mallika Andrews. He described his pain tolerance regimen as a kid with his father, which sounds pretty rough.

“I did squatting with cups of hot tea on my quads, I did that for a while. A lot of the time, without a clock, so you didn’t know how much time was left, which is a little bit different. We had this big maple tree in our front yard, so during fall when the leaves fall off, it would be cold and I would be picking up the leaves with my bare hands to strengthen my hand. That’s why I can do what I do no matter how cold or hot the gym is.”

Some fans have shown concern for Murray’s childhood after hearing that story, but he’s probably satisfied with the results. He is averaging 27.4 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 6.8 assists in this playoff run. Murray had a dominant 30-point triple-double to lead the Nuggets to a Game 3 win.

Jamal Murray Is The Ultimate Co-Star

Murray has never been crowned an All-Star or All-NBA player in his career, but there’s no doubt he can perform at the level of the best when it comes playoff time. He is a perfect complementary scorer with Nikola Jokic and carried a heavy load when it comes to ensuring the Nuggets win. In games he has struggled in during the playoffs, like Game 2 of the Finals, the Nuggets usually lose the game.

He hasn’t agitated for a bigger role and has perfected his two-man combo with Jokic over their years as teammates. Michael Malone said their respective performances in Game 3 was the best he saw this duo perform, but something tells me they may have a lot more left to achieve together.
