The Houston Rockets have a burgeoning young core as of right now, with good prospects such as Jalen Green and Alperen Sengun. However, it seems as though the team is interested in competing sooner rather than later, as they have been linked with many veteran stars ahead of free agency.
The team has most notably been connected with James Harden, who has cemented himself as a Rockets legend. However, it seems as though the team also has options in case the guard stays with the Philadelphia 76ers. A recent report from Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports revealed that the team could target Fred VanVleet if that scenario comes to pass.
“And for that, should Harden ultimately stick with the 76ers, Raptors point guard Fred VanVleet has often been linked to Houston as a secondary option who could perhaps slot into the team’s lead ball-handling role.”
There’s no doubt that Fred VanVleet could give the Houston Rockets a solid veteran leader who can get the best out of the team’s young core. He is an elite 3PT shooter with some floor general ability, and it’d be interesting to see how he would do outside of the Toronto Raptors.
This season, Fred VanVleet averaged 19.3 PPG, 4.1 RPG, and 7.2 APG for the Toronto Raptors. He is clearly a quality addition to any team, and we’ll see where he ends up in free agency.
The Lakers Could Also Try And Acquire Fred VanVleet
The Los Angeles Lakers are a team that could also try and acquire Fred VanVleet. In fact, a previous report suggested that the team could try and use D’Angelo Russell to acquire VanVleet in a sign-and-trade.
“My read on the situation is that the Lakers would prefer to use D’Angelo Russell in a sign-and-trade, but I’m not sure the market is there. Landing Kyrie Irving for Russell is shaping up to be a pipe dream, especially with Dallas unlikely to help Los Angeles out. Fred VanVleet, a Klutch client, looms as a possibility, but adding him would require Toronto to agree to terms with Russell (or take on the Beasley and Bamba contracts).”
It is clear that a lot of teams value what Fred VanVleet brings to the table as a leader and player. Hopefully, we see him join a contending team in the future, and he can definitely be a difference-maker in that context.
