Stephen Curry stunned the basketball world with an incredible 50-point outing in Game 7 against the Sacramento Kings on Sunday.
It led to Colin Cowherd anointing him as the greatest point guard ever over Magic Johnson and now Shaquille O’Neal has also come out and crowned Curry as the greatest.
“You have to say he’s the best point guard ever,” O’Neal said on The Big Podcast. “I’m having a discussion with my guy Jamal Crawford, he’s saying, ‘He’s not a traditional point guard.'”
Host Nischelle Turner asked O’Neal if he was really putting Curry over Johnson, and he stated he was. When she agreed with Crawford about Curry not being a traditional point guard, O’Neal stated that the game has changed.
“The game has evolved,” O’Neal said. “His position says point guard. Doesn’t matter.”
Disqualifying Curry from this conversation just because he isn’t a traditional point guard wouldn’t be fair. As O’Neal says, the game has evolved and Curry has proven he deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as someone like Magic. Stephen A. Smith also stated after Game 7 that it is now time for a conversation on whether Curry is the greatest point guard ever. As for us, we don’t think Steph has surpassed Magic just yet, as a full comparison of their careers shows Johnson still has the edge.
Shaquille O’Neal Has Always Admired Stephen Curry
The way Shaq dominated the game and how Curry does it now are totally different, but that doesn’t mean O’Neal doesn’t appreciate what he has seen from the guard over the years. Even before Curry’s heroics against the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals last year, Shaq said Curry is a top 10 player of all time.
O’Neal even went as far as to say that Curry is his favorite player in the NBA, so he might just be a little bit biased when he calls him the greatest point guard ever. Still, it is hardly an outrageous take at this point, and that speaks to just how great Curry has been.
