Stephen Curry once again rose and shone when the Golden State Warriors needed him the most.

Curry scored 50 points in a winner-takes-all Game 7 against the Sacramento Kings, and Colin Cowherd believes he has taken the mantle of greatest point guard ever from Magic Johnson.

“I think Steph Curry and Magic now if I have to size them up. If you take the Finals MVP from Steph and the 50-point performance in Game 7, I think there’s a valid argument Steph’s the greatest point guard of all time,” Cowherd said on his podcast. “He’s a much greater scorer than Magic, he’s a much greater offensive player than Magic Johnson, terrific ball handler, neither are great defenders.”

Cowherd feels that Magic’s game won’t age as well as other stars, because he wasn’t a great scorer, shooter, or defender. At the end of the day, the game is about putting the ball in the basket as per Cowherd and Curry gets the edge there.

“I look at Steph Curry and it’s not just that he’s a great scorer, he’s the greatest shooter of all time,” Cowherd said. “That is game-changing, Magic didn’t change the game, he was just uniquely gifted. LeBron (James) hasn’t really changed the game, he’s just uniquely gifted. Steph has changed the game, so when you add that component, that he’s literally revolutionized the sport, AAU, high school, college, pro basketball, international basketball with the three-point shot. If I had to choose an all-time team, I think I choose Steph Curry.”

Cowherd believes over the course of time, basketball would be viewed as two different sports, pre-three-pointer and post-three. He thinks the latter will be viewed as more important, and due to that, Curry will, down the road, be seen as the greatest.

“I don’t know how you watch basketball going forward, the last 12 years forward, and not consider Steph Curry the most lethal and dangerous and gifted point guard of all time,” Cowherd said. “It just feels different. His ability to score low, floaters, mid, decoy, three, unlimited range and because of the way he plays, he’s got four or five more years, three more peak years, four, five or six more years it’s going to be a longer career than Magic Johnson, that’s how great Steph is… I think Steph to me feels like the best point guard in the history of the sport.”

Cowherd certainly puts forward some interesting points. Over the last year or so, Curry has really elevated himself when it comes to where he ranks among the greats. Following that title and Finals MVP in 2022, many had Curry as one of the 10 greatest players in NBA history and he is just adding to his legacy with impressive displays like this one. Is he really greater than Magic, though? Well, we don’t think he is there quite yet, as Johnson comes out on top in a full comparison of the two.

Stephen A. Smith Had Some High Praise For Stephen Curry

Stephen A. Smith was just one of many to be left in awe of Curry following that masterful display. He believes it is now time for conversations about Curry potentially being the greatest point guard ever. The Warriors guard set the record for the most points in a Game 7 and one can certainly make the case that it was the greatest performance ever in a Game 7 in NBA history.

Head coach Steve Kerr compared Curry to Michael Jordan after the game as he believes Steph is just being taken for granted now. He just performs at such a high level night in and night out that you forget that what he’s doing is something truly incredible.
