The Dallas Mavericks Are Ready To Fight To Keep Kyrie Irving On The Roster This Summer

The Dallas Mavericks are in no mood to allow Kyrie Irving to leave the team without giving their best to re-sign him.

Kyrie Irving’s future with the Dallas Mavericks is one of the biggest talking points for fans and the media this offseason.

Irving became an unrestricted free agent after the Mavericks’ season was over early. The rumor mill suggests that Kai may not re-sign with the Mavs this summer. But a league executive has told Heavy Sports that the Mavericks are ready to fight to keep the 31-year-old on the roster.

“I think they want Kyrie, and they like Kyrie, but what I can tell you is that Luka, who wasn’t against the trade, just like so many young players today, doesn’t want to share,” said one general manager. “Kyrie was on great behavior — like he was doing everything to try to win over Luka and be a teammate. Every single player on that team and everyone in the organization loves Kyrie from his time there so far.

“I do think there’s some skepticism going forward for what they’re going to offer him. Like they’re not completely naïve. But Kyrie’s behavior was excellent. It was more the fact that Luka had to adjust to playing with such a great player. Everyone there has been saying Kyrie is incredible, and that’s in private, too. Luka’s said it, and he means it.”

The biggest takeaway from the executive’s answer is that Irving showed excellent behavior with the Mavericks.

That good behavior is apparently the driving force behind the Mavericks wanting to bring Irving back to the roster and give the duo of him and Luka Doncic another try.

The Dallas Mavericks Are Confident About Re-Signing Kyrie Irving

After missing the playoffs in his first season with the Dallas Mavericks, it won’t be a surprise if Kyrie Irving wants to test free agency.

Being an unrestricted free agent grants him that leverage. The Mavs are aware of this and still feel extremely good about their chances of re-signing Irving.

“They feel really good about their chances of keeping Kyrie Irving. When they traded for him, they had an option, obviously, to sign him for a two-year extension. He wants more than two years. … Kyrie wants four. So, it may come down to whether or not they’re willing to go to that fourth year, but if he has leverage outside the Mavericks, they may have to go further than they initially want to go. He has quite a bit of leverage because, quite frankly, they cannot lose him. They already lost Jalen Brunson for nothing. They cannot lose Kyrie Irving for nothing.”

Irving’s decision this summer may have a simultaneous effect on the future of Luka Doncic with the organization as well.

Keeping that in mind, the Mavericks would do anything in their power to make sure Kyrie gets a contract tailored to his demands and keeps him with the team for the foreseeable future.
