After a disappointing run with the Dallas Mavericks, Kyrie Irving’s future is up in the air as he hits unrestricted freer agency this summer. As well expected, the Lakers have been mentioned as a potential suitor for Irving, but their odds of signing the All-Star guard remain a mystery.

Speaking on ‘All the Smoke’ podcast, however, former Lakers forward Matt Barnes insisted that if the Purple and Gold do decide to go all-in on Kyrie, there is nothing that can get in their way.

“When the Lakers want someone, they get him,” said Barnes. “No matter what the cap is, no matter what they have to do when the Lakers want someone, they get him. So it’ll definitely be a Kyrie watch. When they want someone, they make it happen. I don’t expect him to be back in Dallas, to be honest with you. I just don’t know if that was a very good fit, although they didn’t have a ton of time to play together. I just don’t think that’s where he lands this summer.”

Rob Pelinka was heavily considering going for Kyrie at the deadline before the Nets traded him to the Mavericks. Ultimately, however, the price was too much for the Lakers to meet, and they had no choice but to move on and look for other trades instead.

For now, D’Angelo Russell seems to be enough to make the team competitive again, but there are concerns about his consistency, given the up-and-down play in Minnesota.

With Kyrie, the Lakers would have a star trio that they could lean on for years to come. But unless Kyrie is serious about leaving the Mavericks, this is nothing but a dream for Lakers fans.

Will Irving Re-Sign With The Mavs?

The details of Irving’s exit from the Nets are still somewhat unclear, but we know that he’ll be looking for a long-term contract as a free agent this summer. Considering his complicated history and track record of betrayal, it makes sense that teams are somewhat hesitant to commit to a long-term relationship with Irving.

Unfortunately for the Mavs, they might have no choice but to meet his demands if they want to salvage their relationship with Luka.

If not, the Lakers will likely be among several teams waiting for their chance to sign him.
