After starting the 2023 NBA free agency with a low profile, the Houston Rockets are landing the first big name of the open market.

Fred VanVleet was heavily linked with the Texan squad over the past couple of weeks, and they’re finally getting their hands on the veteran guard, agreeing to a three-year, $130 million deal.

“Free agent G Fred VanVleet has agreed on a three-year, $130 million contract with the Houston Rockets, @KlutchSports CEO Rich Paul and agent Erika Ruiz tell ESPN. Rockets land ex-Raptors All-Star in his prime at 29 years old,” Adrian Wojnarowski reports.

VanVleet was one of the hottest free agents in the league, and his name was everywhere in the league. Teams like the Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Lakers were mentioned among his potential sweepstakes.

The Rockets are entering a new era, and after the James Harden situation became more complex, they turned their attention to different players. VanVleet was one of them, and he’s ready to join Ime Udoka and Co. at Toyota Center this summer.

Houston can become an attractive destination for free agents and one of the best teams in the Western Conference again, and it all can start with VanVleet, who was undrafted and now secured the first max contract of this summer.

The Houston Rockets Have A Long List Of Potential Targets

The Rockets reportedly had a long list of potential targets that included VanVleet, Draymond Green, Khris Middleton, and others. These two have returned to their teams, but the rest of the list is still available.

Players like Austin Reaves and Dillon Brooks are free agents still, and the Rockets are patiently waiting to see if they can land one of them at least.

This is a big pick for the Rockets, as FVV had more options to select from. Fred averaged 19.3 points, 7.2 assists, and 4.1 rebounds in 69 games this season.
