Russell Westbrook had a very inconsistent tenure with the Los Angeles Lakers, and it is clear that the point guard did not play as expected. Many thought that putting Westbrook next to LeBron James and Anthony Davis would result in a championship for the Lakers, but clearly, that has not been the case.
Though many people have blamed Russell Westbrook directly for the Lakers having a poor season last year, it is clear that he wasn’t the only one at fault. Recently, Rob Pelinka defended Russell Westbrook, pointing out that it is “unfair” to put all the responsibility on one player for the team’s failures. Michael Corvo of ClutchPoints relayed the news.
“Our aspirations when we did the Westbrook trade was it would lead to a championship, a contending team. We didn’t meet that goal. So, you have to then look to pivot if something is not working to correct it. … I think it’s really unfair to put the last year and a half, or whatever period of time that is, on one player. I think the whole roster has to come together and fit.”
The Los Angeles Lakers did manage to move off Russell Westbrook at the trade deadline, and hopefully, both the franchise and the player find more success in the future. Their partnership clearly didn’t work out, and perhaps a new beginning for both parties is best.
Russell Westbrook Could Be A Good Fit On The Los Angeles Clippers
After Russell Westbrook got traded to the Utah Jazz, many speculated that the point guard could receive a buyout as the team is rebuilding. A team that has already been linked to Russell Westbrook is the Los Angeles Clippers, and recently, we saw Paul George publically say that he believes Russell Westbrook could be a good fit on the team.
“If there’s somebody out there, Russell. You know, if it makes sense and obviously it goes with our team, we’re all for it. We’re all for having a point guard. But you know, in saying that, I think we’re good as well if nothing happens. I think we’ve got enough in this locker room to make it work. But it would definitely improve our team… Make the game easy. Hopefully Russell sees this, and we figure something out.”
It remains to be seen if the Los Angeles Clippers do end up signing Russell Westbrook. They have enough shooting to make him work on the team, and on a veteran minimum, he’s worth a look.
Of course, there will be other franchises that want to acquire Russell Westbrook if he gets bought out. However, the Los Angeles Clippers offer a unique combination of good fit and good role, and we’ll see what happens in the future.
