Paolo Banchero and Ty Jerome had some harsh words for each other during the Orlando Magic‘s 108-103 upset win over the Cleveland Cavaliers. The two consistently kept going at it during the game, with Banchero remarking that Jerome was only successful because of the team he was on. Jerome quipped back that Banchero couldn’t guard him and that he would start on the Orlando Magic’s roster.

Paolo Banchero: “You only look good because you’re on a good team, weak a** n****.”

Ty Jerome: “You can’t guard, I know that… You def can’t guard me.”

Banchero: “You ain’t sh*t, trash a** n****.”

Jerome: “I’ll start on y’all team.”

At the end of the day, the trash talk motivated both players to bring their best. Banchero would end up leading the entire game in scoring, with 24 points (6-22 FG), 11 rebounds, seven assists, one steal, and one block. While Jerome would come off the bench to deliver an efficient 12 points (5-9 FG), one rebound, and one assist. It’s hard to say that neither player didn’t give it their all last night.

In the end, Banchero got the last laugh, leading the Magic to a massive upset win over the Cavaliers. This win ended the Cavaliers’ 16-game winning streak, bringing them back down to earth as the season entered its final stretch. The Cavaliers must realize that their great performance this season doesn’t make them infallible, and any team in the NBA can compete with them on any given night.

Jerome has recently been the subject of controversy. During their game against the Trail Blazers, he specifically singled out a female referee for what he perceived to be poor officiating. So, for him to actively engage in and, for all intents and purposes, lose a trash-talking battle against another player is not going to be the best look.

Jerome has been one of the key players for the Cavaliers this season, especially coming off the bench. They have had one of the most proficient starting lineups in the league, but Jerome, along with the other Cavaliers’ strong performances off the bench have played a massive role in how well the Cavs have done in the 2024-25 NBA campaign.

For the season, 11.9 points, 3.3 assists, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 50.5% from the field, 43.5% from beyond the arc, and 88.5% from the free-throw line. Jerome is quite nearly having a coveted 50-40-90 season, just 1.5% shy from the free-throw line.

As for the Orlando Magic, Paolo Banchero, along with Franz Wagner‘s injury issues derailed the strong momentum they had early in the season. With Banchero’s return, the squad did not immediately return to winning ways. But after winning three of their last five games, there might be some hope for them.

The Magic currently sit eighth in the Eastern Conference, and will most likely have to qualify for the playoffs through the play-in tournament. If they have their team at full strength and in the right groove, they will back themselves to find success in the playoffs.
