The Golden State Warriors have suffered another setback through a challenging start to this season. The 8-10 Warriors will be without forward Andrew Wiggins for the foreseeable future after he picked up a right index finger injury as a result of a car door slamming on his hand.

“Andrew Wiggins slammed a car door on his right index finger this morning. Had difficulty shooting this morning. Out tonight. Steve Kerr thinks it’ll be short-term.”

A tough start to the season gets even worse for the Warriors with this news. They haven’t had their full lineup in many games this season due to injuries to Stephen Curry and a suspension to Draymond Green. Just as both Green and Curry look to be available for the future, they lose Wiggins.

Wiggins is a crucial player on the wing for the Warriors but hasn’t had the kind of season many would be expecting from him. He’s averaging 12.8 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.2 assists on 43.3% from the field and 26.7% from three. His poor form has been one of the reasons that Golden State has had an underwhelming start to the season, with this injury likely sidelining him for a short while.

Steve Kerr Unwilling To Give Up On Warriors’ Championship Core

Steve Kerr spoke about the starting five that won the 2022 championship before the Warriors game against the Clippers tonight. Kerr believes in the starting five from that championship win to put it together and lead the Warriors to contention again.

“We won a championship a year and a half ago. The guys who are going to drive us to win a title or not, we know who they are. They’re Steph, Draymond, Wiggs, Loon, and Klay. We know those are the guys that are going to have to perform at a high level if we’re going to compete for a title.”

This may be true, but Steve Kerr isn’t in the front office. The decision on the future of these five players will be decided by new GM Mike Dunleavy Jr., a man tasked with figuring out how the Warriors transition from this dynasty era into whatever is next. He doesn’t have the same relationship with the core that Bob Myers did, with the former GM leaving the role so he wasn’t responsible for tweaking the core that brought him four championships.

Frustration is already bubbling in the front office, with major concerns around Wiggins’ conditioning.

“We won a championship a year and a half ago. The guys who are going to drive us to win a title or not, we know who they are. They’re Steph, Draymond, Wiggs, Loon, and Klay. We know those are the guys that are going to have to perform at a high level if we’re going to compete for a title.”

This injury means Wiggins can take the time off to heal and find himself in basketball shape again. He has a long-term contract and a championship in hand, so maybe his motivation is running low.
