Anthony Davis was supposed to transition into becoming the main superstar for the Los Angeles Lakers in a few years. But he has not been able to stay fit for long enough to make it his team, and it could now become a problem.
LeBron James has picked up an injury that will keep him out for a few weeks during a very crucial part of the season. And Anthony Davis will have to do the heavy lifting, but his previous record won’t fill anyone with confidence.
Anthony Davis and the Los Angeles Lakers are 15-25, while LeBron James doesn’t play since they have had the superstar duo. That means he has won less than 40% of the games he has played without LeBron James.
During those matchups, Davis has averaged 25 points and 11 rebounds per game, which isn’t bad. But considering that he needs to seriously step up without James, general star numbers aren’t enough. The Lakers haven’t had great rosters either, which means he has to do even more.
And it looks even worse when one realizes that LeBron James has still managed a winning record without Anthony Davis. The Lakers are 68-66 in those games, and even this season, James has kept the team afloat at 10-9 without AD.
The Los Angeles Lakers are still only 2.5 games behind the 7th seed, meaning they are well and truly alive in the playoff race. But without LeBron James and his 30 points per game, it will be on Davis to step up and be the main man. He has the skill set to do it and based on his recent comments, might also have the will to make it happen.
Anthony Davis Doesn’t Want LeBron James To Rush Back From Injury
Not having LeBron James for most of the run-in as they try to make the playoffs is a killer for the Lakers. Many expect that they will not be able to reach their objectives now that James is set to miss significant time. But Anthony Davis has issued a rallying cry, telling the King to take it easy.
“What I don’t want is him to rush back really early and it’s still bothering him,” Davis said. “And now he can’t be himself… I want him to get completely right and healthy before he steps on the floor. It’s on us other guys in the locker room to step up and continue to win basketball games.”
Anthony Davis has come to a defining point in his career. If he can take the lead and ensure the Lakers get to the playoffs, it will do a lot for his legacy and how he is viewed around the league. His previous record doesn’t inspire confidence, but the past is very much the past.
