Becky Hammon weighed on why she didn’t become a head coach in the NBA and didn’t mince her words while at it.

“If I had a 16-year NBA career and my name was Brian, I’d probably be hired and fired a couple of times by now,” she told TIME’s Sean Gregory.

Hammon spent eight years as an assistant for the San Antonio Spurs and interviewed for many head-coaching positions, but none materialized. “I can’t even guesstimate,” she said.

“People don’t like different. And look, I’ve been different my whole life. I don’t look the part. I’m telling you, it helps to look the part.”

“If I walk in the room and I have the biggest set of b*lls in the room, it’s not going to work,” she says. “Because it’s going to take somebody that is not afraid to make a hard choice.”

That said, Hammon is still widely regarded as one of the better tactical minds. In December 2021, she was hired by the Las Vegas Aces, and the former PG made an instant impact as he led the team to their first title while also becoming the first WNBA player to win a title as head coach and also winning coach of the year.

Will we see Hammon ever coach a team in the NBA? Only time will tell. But what is surely one to look out for is her astute understanding of the game.

Becky Hammon To Replace Nick Nurse As Toronto Raptors Coach

Earlier, Hammon and the Raptors made headlines when the franchise was granted permission to speak with Hammon regarding the possibility of coaching Toronto.

NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski reported the development. Hammon is the reigning WNBA Coach of the Year and her name will see her join the likes of Mike Budenholzer, Frank Vogel, Nurse, and Doc Rivers — all of whom are frontrunners to lead a franchise from the sidelines in the upcoming season.
