Russell Westbrook was a part of the Los Angeles Clippers to end the 2022-23 season but is a free agent this summer. Although the Clippers would surely like to retain him, they aren’t the only team looking to acquire his services.

Despite a decline in recent years, Russell Westbrook remains an incredibly effective player for the right price. And according to The Athletic, nearly half the league could be interested in bringing him on board.

“Identifying specific suitors is tough because Westbrook is such a polarizing player at this point, but, intuitively, I could see the Phoenix Suns, Boston Celtics, Milwaukee Bucks, Philadelphia 76ers (if James Harden leaves), Dallas Mavericks and Miami Heat (if Gabe Vincent leaves) as high-end teams looking for guard depth,” Danny Leroux wrote.

“The Brooklyn Nets, Portland Trail Blazers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Chicago Bulls, Detroit Pistons, and San Antonio Spurs are below them in the pecking order but could have a use for Westbrook.”

Russell Westbrook commanded a salary of $47 million on the last year of his previous contract in the 2022-23 season, which was widely considered one of the worst contracts in the league. The former MVP will command a significantly lesser salary on any new deal though, which makes his 15.9 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 7.5 assists seem like a much more attractive proposition.

Los Angeles Clippers Are Hoping To Re-Sign Russell Westbrook On A Hometown Discount

Russell Westbrook is from California, and the Clippers are hoping they can get him on the cheap for about $3.8 million thanks to that. He averaged 23.6 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 7.5 assists in the playoffs though, which means that it will be hard to get him for that cheap as well. Many teams could use a player like Russ in their guard rotation, so the Clippers might have to spend some more money to retain him.

It might be the best idea for him to stay with the Clippers, he seems to have found a great fit there. But with options abundant from the look of it, he will surely have a lot to consider in free agency. It’s important for Russell Westbrook that he shines wherever he goes, the slander surrounding him has been out of hand and he needs to remind everyone of his greatness.
