The Brooklyn Nets entered the 2022-23 season expecting a parade at the end of the year, with their duo of Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving looking to come back with a vengeance. It all got derailed when Kyrie asked for a trade and the Nets obliged by trading him to Dallas and sending Durant to Phoenix.
The KD trade brought them Mikal Bridges, an iron man who played 83 games this season and blossomed as the No. 1 option on the Nets. Adrian Wojnarowski has said the Nets are planning on rebuilding around Mikal and not trading him this summer.
“Mikal Bridges is a guy they’re going to build around… The kind of offers the Nets have gotten for him speaks to how valuable he is, a player, I think for Brooklyn, they keep in place for the next big star that’s available in a trade.”
Bridges averaged 26.1 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.7 assists after being traded to the Nets. The team wasn’t very good, as they almost fell into the play-in tournament after being the third seed when KD and Kyrie were moved.
Do The Nets Need To Cash Out While Mikal’s Value Is High?
Rumors have circulated that Brooklyn has turned down extremely attractive offers from the likes of the Grizzlies for Bridges. He does have a phenomenal two-way skillset, but not putting an elite guard next to him and expecting him to carry them into the postseason is not prudent. Bridges will start next season as a 27-year-old, so holding on to him for a rebuilding project would just cause him to lose value over time.
The Nets can embrace a proper rebuild with all the assets on their roster. They need to build this squad back up from the ground after all the drama they’ve had to go through since 2019. Unless they have a win-now move planned to maximize Bridges’ on the roster, they should trade him to the highest bidder and use those assets.
